Do colleges really recalculate GPAs? If so, what happens to class rank?

I read in some other forums that colleges sometimes recalculate GPA's.

Is this true?

If so, what happens to class rank?

Why would they recalculate the GPA's?

Do they use the schools GPA or there own when publishing admissions statistics?

Thanks any answers would be helpful.

they recalculate GPAs because many schools do it differently and some weight a ton whereas others dont weight at all... so they use their own scale to compare applicants and will sometimes remove courses that arent core (gym, health, etc.). But your class rank will stay the same and still be used...

ok, the weight system at my school sucks, so that should help me a little.

So, in acknowledging that GPA's and weight systems are often flawed, do they then put a less imphasis on the class rank?

not necessarily because in your class, everyone is under the same weight system/gpa calculation...

AP grades get a lot of weigh tin calculations

^do you mean grade in class or on AP test?

Chinny - HopefulCEO means the grade in the class itself.

I don't think AP scores (on the AP tests) typically play any role in admissions. I mean, obviously if someone got all 1s and 2s, that may adversely affect them, and if someone's an AP scholar that may benefit them, but I don't think they're generally a factor.
