I was just wondering what kind of information colleges share with each other about applicants. I guess they probably share the names of all the applicants to make sure the ED agreements aren't violated, but beyond that do they share any other information, such as personal, financial or extracurricular info, maybe even essays?

They probably don't have the time to do that for the vast majority of applicants.

I second haru07 that they don't have the time. But also I believe that sharing a student's personal information without their consent with another college is illegal.

I believe they can not share info on applicants ... there were court cases in the past and sharing applicant lists is considered "restraint of trade" against the applicants. The Ivies used to share lists are were one of the targets of the suit which I believe was in the 60s or 70s.

I am not sure what the rules are about sharing info about admitted students ... or if part of applying ED also included agreeing to allow your name to be shared ... because some schools somehow let other schools know about ED admits.

The ivies were slapped with anti-trust violations because at one point in time, they actually met to discuss who would get certain applicants. The choice was taken out of the student's hand.

Your counselors are the first ones to enforce the ED choice. If you asked them to send documentation to multiple ED schools, they'd ask you to pick one. In the rare case that a student gets around that, we often find out later, when the mid-year report doesn't come or the student begs to be let out of the agreement because they were accepted to two ED schools.
