do colleges verify your Extracurricular involvement?

To set the record straight:
-I didn’t fake anything
-I actually got in ED
-I was honest

You’re right being vice prez won’t get you an acceptance or rejection letter, but theres a pretty high chance you will be rejected with everything else you’ve said.

And like I said before if theres anyone on this site who cares enough about losing a RD seat (although you’re not a strong applicant) they will be sure to alert Columbia. Or just cuz you’re so *****ing annoying.

Or people who got in ED :hint:hint: and don’t want to rub elbows with YOUR kind.

“haha. why you dont like when people have fun? I know I wont get in I just like teasing people. I cant believe so many posters took me seriously and this thread is fullllll. Is not there anything else that you might want to do? for me…no…not right now.”

^is that an attempt to stop anyone from doing so? (since I mentioned the notion in my previous post)

I like to think of myself as a pretty amiable guy.

huh, here’s another person that thinks I am not friendly. Why is everyone all after me today?

To answer your question, polsci, colleges do randomly check applicants’ applications. Colleges are also more likely to check your application if they feel it is…too good.
Bottom line: your application could be checked purely randomly or if they felt you were lying.

I have a question for you though. It seems that even though people on CC are telling you that colleges do check applications, you still feel compelled to “exaggerate” on your application. If so, then why bother starting this thread? I understand that you might think your actions MIGHT benefit you in terms of admissions, but what if Columbia DOES find out you were exaggerating? I don’t think the ad. coms. will care to listen to your explanation on how exaggerating information is ethical. If they found out, you will definitely be removed from the decision pool. I heard that the colleges might even contact other colleges and inform them that a certain applicant is lying on his or her application.

If I were you, I would not risk that chance…

In terms of your not knowing your exact activities involvement hours, I don’t know the precise number of hours I volunteered either. But following the application instructions, I’m putting an estimate of my hours. For example, I know I volunteered at the hospital for 229 hours. In that case, I will either put 200 hrs, 220 hrs, or 230 hrs. on my application. I WON’T say that I worked 250 hrs…or…300 hrs. The extra 30 or so hours that’s supposed to “fluff” my application really won’t help too much. A well written, truthful essay would be much better.

I hope you make the ethical choice in the end, and good luck to you.

Don’t feed the ■■■■■■.

yes but thats the problem that they are nor asking for total hours. They are asking for hours per week. So do they expect me to start making averages or what?

The bottom line is that its not going to make any enormous difference in any case. My brother had 800 on some of the SATS and got rejected from Yale. My cousin on the other hand had 600+s maximum on hers and got into stanford. I have no idea how it is possible. It’s all really confusing me.

I was just asking

poli, i dont believe this thread in particular calls for the whole “ED kids are arrogant” indictment. it’s plainly ethics …

and faking extracurricular involvement would lead colleges to believe, if they believe, that you actually care about the things you’re doing. in such a case, you would have something to show for all the hours spent … numbers don’t make a bit of difference if you have nothing to show for it, generally speaking. ethics aside, flat-out faking probably won’t help you. sincerity goes a long way. call me crazy.

last i checked, columbia doesn’t even ask for hours? and, uh, you do have space if you are thusly inclined …

Activity: Debate Team
Leaderhip?: President (9th)

Uh… question…

I volunteered at a hospital for 150 hours last year (stopped this year)

However for my common app i put this ( i put more than 1 activity in 1 box)

Community Service:
(Ex-officio Officer/Hospital Volunteer)
[Housing and Community Development Community/ Library Advisory Board / Providence Hospital]
15 hours a week / 10 weeks a year

^ this is for common app…

should I do that? or make my hospital thing a seperate box (meaning id have to take out the other 2 activities b/c i have no other room)

i cant believe im reading this hahaha
why didnt you even post this…seems like you’ve already made up your mind that you’re going to lie so why bother asking for anyones advice

that was supposed to be did*

is your dad a king? prince karim?

no haha. i do personally know one in dubai
does that make me royal enough haha

ACCEPTED

unfortunately i dont think hes a ■■■■■ because hes made legit questions asking for help on the forum and also illegit questions asking about ethical dilemmas.

no use lecturing to you. I won’t be the one to do it, but somebody mentioned this and I think you’ve made a big mistake in your diabolical scheme anyways. theres going to be tons of RD applicants and one of them will probably rat you out based on your posting history. if you’re going to be immoral and sneaky you should work on executing it better.

His ■■■■■ posts were deleted.

…things like this make me think i have no chance of applying to columbia because of all the embellishment :/…i’m still going to use real stats and try my best though…

I got in (still wondering how) and everything on my application was real, not even exaggerated. It can be done, good luck Eyelykmaths

ACCEPTED

aaahahaha!

polsci, to answer your question, Columbia probably won’t do a background check on any of the trivial ECs you list. The truth is, the fakeable ECs probably won’t be significant enough anyways to matter to the adcoms (stuff like FIRST Robotics, USAMO, Science Competitions - those are all very easy to verify). However, as I’ve posted on the Transfer threads, the more ECs you list, the more your application loses focus, and the more likely you are to receive a rejection - so having a bunch of activities listed is not always all roses.
