do colleges verify your Extracurricular involvement?

Can someone answer this please?

Thanks

Uh… question…

I volunteered at a hospital for 150 hours last year (stopped this year)

However for my common app i put this ( i put more than 1 activity in 1 box)

Community Service:
(Ex-officio Officer/Hospital Volunteer)
[Housing and Community Development Community/ Library Advisory Board / Providence Hospital]
15 hours a week / 10 weeks a year

^ this is for common app…

should I do that? or make my hospital thing a seperate box (meaning id have to take out the other 2 activities b/c i have no other room)

^Actually if I were an adcom, I would view that as an obvious attempt at embellishment of a trivial activity.

Remember, more is not better!

Uh… are you talking to me? And what do you mean…

Back to OP.

Here’s the deal…many colleges now have people who surf this website and many others, you might think you haven’t given out info, but you do and they can quickly figure out the person. They also ■■■■■ through facebook and myspace. SO get rid of those party pics. It was actually on 20/20 or Dateline or one of those news shows, where admin dept showed how they do random checks through their IT. IF I gave a crap, I could figure out your general background. If I was in admission I would flag you and send this thread to IT to get a better idea. IT then profiles you sends it back to admission and they know who they are looking for.
Use me as an ex., it is easy to figure out my DS I am a realtor, bullet was in the AF in NC and grad from UMD, our DS goes to UMD on full ride for AF and we now live in VA…(I saved you the trouble from hitting my name)…how many kids at UMDCP do you think have that history…my guess is 1!

YOU ARE FOOLING YOURSELF in every aspect of life. I can give you sob stories too…that never excuses anyone from having a MORAL compass.

Dear OP,

Lying is WRONG even if it is to embellish your chances. I’m not attacking you personally, I’m just stating the fact that lying’s not right any way you look at it. I know plenty of people who didn’t have such great scores/EC’s/were in extremely poor circumstances, but they were very honest about their situation, and got into Ivies over people who were debate captains and had 2400s. Believe it or not, the adcoms would rather have your complete honesty than exaggerated hours.
Also, you mention that you know people who got in and graduated even after embellishing. Well – colleges can revoke your admission at any time while you’re in the school if they see fit. I think most colleges can revoke your degree after you’ve graduated if the offense is serious enough. Please, don’t let this haunt you for the rest of your life.

and

posting here with these questions is just plain stupid. Again, not criticizing you, but the act. I’m sorry, but if I were an adcom, I would be able to find out exactly who you were in less than 15 mins, with IP addresses and all as well as all the personal info you put out here.

aerial blue, are you suggesting me to just put one activity? (I changed it to only one)

^you could put them on the same line if you have other activities that need to fit in the seven common app spaces. If you already have those filled but you want to include that extra activity, you can combine them. I don’t think that’s embellishment b/c you’re not lying about hours…you’re combining them but also listing both activities so colleges will see a combination of hours rather than embellished hours.

ok thank you!
