I have taken numerous A-G classes at my local community college. I believe that each semester at a community college is equivalent to two semesters of high school course work and that they are awarded honors level GPA bonus points (i.e. A=5, B=4, C=3). I was just wondering if each community college class fulfills 2 of the maximum 8 extra points because its equivalent to 2 high school semesters, or just 1 of the 8 extra points because you only get one grade and it is only 1 semester long.

Even though one semester of most college level courses will satisfy one year of the “a-g” requirement, they are only given one semester grade to be calculated into the GPA.

That is interesting. My son's high school counselor told him his cc classes would be viewed exactly the same as AP courses. (1 year) Do you make any distinctions between transferable classes that are 4 units (72 hours of instruction) vs. 3 units? (54 hours of instruction) Also my son (graduating senior) just completed a cc course in December and included it on his application. Should he send in the grade received? If yes how?
Thank you for all of your help!

I have another question regarding CC classes + GPA. I took two German classes at the local community college, German 1 during the fall semester 9th grade and German 2 during fall semester 10th grade. When the UC's see this and calculate "their own GPA" will they only use the German 2 from 10th grade or will they use both. (I'm hoping for both).

Hockeydemon05: We only calculate the UC GPA using “a-g” courses completed in the 10-11 grades. Therefore, only German 2 will be used in calculating the GPA. When looking at the total number of “a-g” courses completed all courses 9-12 grade will be considered.

Collegemom16: Most college courses will satisfy one year of the “a-g” requirement, some might even satisfy more than one year of the requirement. For example, a semester of an appropriate art course will satisfy the one year requirement of Visual and Performing Arts. As a separate process, when we calculate the GPA UC transferable courses will be considered as part of the 8 allowed weighted GPA courses (Please see University of California - Counselors for more information).

During admissions we do not differentiate between 3 and four unit courses; however, to meet “a-g” requirements the course must be 3 semester (4 quarter) units. Once admitted, if the course is UC transferable, the units will considered and a 3 unit courses will grant less units than a 4 unit course.

UCD Admissions, I've taken 1 year of high school Spanish at my high school. I have also taken Spanish 1B at the local community college.

On the UC website it states this:
" If the prerequisite for Spanish 1B at a community college is two years of high school Spanish, can it be assumed that Spanish 1A is equivalent to two years of high school Spanish and therefore meets the "e" requirement for freshman applicants?

Yes, if the prerequisite for Spanish 1B is Spanish 1A or two years of high school Spanish, 1A would meet the "e" requirement."

The prerequisite for Spanish 1B at my local CC was 1 year of high school spanish. The prerequisite for Spanish 2A is is Spanish 1B or two years of high school spanish. Is it safe to assume then, that Spanish 1B would fulfill the requirement of 1 more year of high school spanish? My counselor said it should be fine, but I just want to make sure.

With 1B being the prerequisite for 2A, completing 1B with a passing grade should satisfy two year of high school Spanish. If you took, the course at a California Community College you can check the Welcome to ASSIST site and it will indicate which course needs to be completed to meet the freshman language admission requirement. Just select your CCC, select UC transferable courses and finally select Spanish.

My D has taken 7 cc courses.Does that count as 7 year long courses.I mean does it mean 14 semester of High school courses. Also in the UCD comprehensive review point system every semester beyond 35 courses is given an additional 50 points.

so if she had 40 semesters of high school courses and 7 ccc then would it be 47( 40 +7) or 54(40 +14)

Even though semester long college level courses can satisfy a year, sometimes more, of the "a-g" requirements, they are never counted for more than a semester of actual coursework. So taking 7 courses, I'm assuming each course is a semester long, would only count as 7 semesters of weighted GPA, again assuming that these courses were taken in the 10 and 11 grades, and only 7 semesters of "a-g" coursework. So if 40 semesters of "a-g" are taken at the high school level your student would have 47 "a-g" courses.

My D has taken courses at UC Extension program. Are they counted towards UC GPA as college courses. Also if one is a 2 unit course, how would u calculate them in the GPA. would u consider that course as an enrichment courses and give points in some other category of comprehensive review?

Would taking intro to sociology and getting an A in that class receive a weighted gpa of 5? or would it still receive a 4 because it is an intro class, not general?
