For my common app that I submitted for ED, for the extracurricular section, I just wrote community service, and then listed all the community service activities I have done under the explanation. There was a slot that I had to put down about how many hours per week and how many weeks I've spent, but that is just everything all together. I feel like stacking hours in a single volunteering activity is not as great as doing just many random activities.

What? Doing “many random activities” is NOT what colleges generally like to see, because it implies the person doesn’t really have much passion and may just be doing the activity for padding. They would rather see devoted community service people who concentrate and contribute substantively to just one activity.

but colleges can’t really tell though
even if you list a lot of community service, it doesn’t necessarily make them lacking devotion.

but that’s what they assume.
they don’t know you as a person, so all they can see is “oh…this person likes to switch volunteer work and isn’t consistent”

I know this seems unfair and stupid, but it’s how it works
