Do Computer Scientists have to work 9-5 jobs?

As someone who loves to have an organized life, I ironically dislike having a structured work schedule. I even dreaded going to high school because of having to wake up so early for 5/7 days of the week. If I major in Computer Science, will I have to face the sadness of having to wake up early and repeat the same routine every day of me life?

P.S. I’m a night owl, so if I don’t have to work mornings at all I would be the happiest person alive.

My mom worked at microsoft for a number of years. She said the engineers (coders) usually came in late, like around ten and also left later. Not completely sure, but I think computer professions are pretty laid back, versus, say, something like engineering. Also, a lot of startups in need of programmers usually run on their own schedules. I also wouldn’t worry too much about when you would be working right now, that will come later after college.

Depends on the employer. Also if you eventually move up to management, most likely.

Depends on the employer and the job. Some employers will want you to work a traditional schedule, where everyone works about the same schedule. Some jobs might let you telecommute and set your own hours, as long as you skype in for your weekly meetings. Startups can be more flexible, but more demanding. At very early stage startups, they may expect you to work a very high number of hours.
