I have heard this over and over again-that UCSB, UCSD, UCI, and UCD all use a “point system” where they assign points to each factor that they evaluate. But I was researching the selection process for all the UC’s, and Davis didn’t mention anything about assigning points, whereas UCSD (who is renown for that system) had the complete breakdown on their website. Davis claims that they use “a comprehensive review”-similar to UCB and UCLA perhaps?
And also, I have talked to my counselor about this a billion times, and she always says that Davis wants a “well rounded” student-and thats what they look for. Compared to UCSD’s-who ever can get a 4.5 and a 2400 is in.
Also does Irvine follow the point system, or the more holistic approach?
Thanks,

Both UCD and UCI use the point system.
UCD- [UC Davis: Admission Criteria](Freshman Application Tips)
UCI- [UCI Comprehensive Review and Information on Appeals](http://www.admissions.uci.edu/you_applied/not_admitted.html)

Still, all the formulas require more than just SAT scores and high GPAs; if you only had a 4.5 and a 2400 on the UCSD formula you would have just 6420 points.

UCD doesnt multiply the SAT by .8 (I saw a spreadsheet of the UCD point system from a link and others say the same) and you add the SAT II also, so you can potentially get 8500.

Irvine doesn’t use a point system. They use “comprehensive review,” which is a holistic process. I believe the other UC’s, with the exception of LA and cal, do use a point system.

Also, just so you know, there have probably been like ten threads (at least) with this exact same topic.

Can someone give me a link how to calculate Davis points?

I got the link from one of my friends so I dont remember where it is. Google it?

I can’t find it…

do you know what it’s called?

@sndebrosse- Actually, the point system is the comprehensive review; the “comprehensive review” is what all the UCs call the point system. http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/general_info/uc_reviews/freshman_app.html

@lefleur- Here’s the document that was being passed around on CC- but since it was first posted in 2008, it is very likely out of date. [ucd score](http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pKB1yD5iQn_89XJagnVWmIQ)

how many points should one get?

if you add all the max possible point it doesnt add up to the max point written on it o.o so some categories mustve been missing.

any idea of how many points you should get?

-.- pass the cutoff :P?

yea the comprehensive review thing threw me off-cause apparently all the UCs use the same name for it.
And I believe that the document posted is way of-as far as the cutoff-considering UCSD this year was 7900.
I hope UCD is lower :(

^ Remember that the formulas aren’t the same for each campus, so getting 7900 points on one formula isn’t the same as getting 7900 points on another.

For example, like Shibykin said, UCSD multiplies the SAT I by .8, while UCD doesn’t, so a 2400 would be worth 1920 points to UCSD but 2400 points to UCD. As a result, comparing the cut offs between each school is worthless. According to UCSC ( https://admissions.sa.ucsc.edu/apply/10_froshNotAdmitted.cfm ), their cut off this year was 7755.

oh u almost got my hope high for UCD XD until I saw u put UCSC :). I got in UCSC already waiting patiently for UCSC UCSB and UCB :). Unpatiently waiting for UCI <.<

btw UCSD cut off this year was 7744 not 7900 :).

^ ha you would know

hehe yea XD

sorry, autumnal, but only SD and Davis add up the points and then use a cutoff line; everyone above the line is in.

Cal and UCLA, really do use holistic review. They will admit a low gpa-low test score kid who writes a passionate essay about overcoming some sort of adversity. At SD & D, that same app has zero chance bcos gpa+tests comprise most of their points, and the essays are virtually worthless. (The writing quality and story don’t matter. SD for example, just reviews the essay looking to award more points for low income, first gen, overcoming adversity, but the essay itself is worth zero.)

Actually, it looks like “comprehensive review” is just a generic term referring to the UC admissions process at every school.

Anyway, UCI doesn’t use a point system to make decisions. This is indicated in the link you posted.
