Do EC's matter when applying to CAS?

I know this is a subjective question. Obviously if I were an amazing nationally recognized debater or something of the sort it would "matter" but say if I did a handful of multiyear EC's, with leadership positions in several of them, would this affect my chances of applying to CAS or does the school predominantly make it's decision overwhelmingly on GPA's and SAT's?

I don't want responses where "no, my friend got X score and has X GPA and got rejected" is said.

NYU CAS is easy to get into. A moderate GPA and an SAT of about 1800 - 2000 would get you into CAS easily. Of course the lower your scores, you should make up by having better ECs.

Really? I heard that CAS is pretty competitive and you actually need a score more like a 2100 to get in, as well as an A-/B+ GPA (bordering on the former).

Shuffleace: That’s not true at all. CAS’s acceptance rate for the class of 2012 was 24% and 28% including LSP.

Most CAS students have 3.7+ GPA and ~2100 SAT. A ~1900 SAT coupled with a very good GPA (or vice versa) might give you a chance at LSP, but probably not CAS. Certainly there are exceptions but a 1900 CAS admit is the exception, not the norm.

Check this website out, it’s the college admissions GPA/SAT scores of a school in california. As you can see, kids who got admitted to NYU clearly did not have an average of 2100 as stated by nyyankees2012. You could probably come to a conclusion that all you need to regular NYU is about a 1900.

So…to answer the question.

Do EC’s matter when applying to NYU CAS?

shuffleace: I don’t know what you’re looking at, but the numbers you just provided certainly don’t show that 1900s are the norm for CAS admits. I’m not going to argue the point any further because it really does not matter.

askjeeves: Yes, ECs matter when applying to NYU CAS. They won’t make or break you, but applying to any top college, it’s assumed that you’re going to need SOME extracurricular activities.

Yes I do know that they play SOME role but I’m not sure if CAS makes their decision overwhelmingly on SAT’s and GPA.

CAS and Stern are the most numbers-driven at NYU (that is, they’re predictable) so as long as you have adequate GPA and SAT scores, as well as demonstrated interest/leadership in a few areas, you should be fine.
