Do edx online courses help your application?

Recently I have contemplated taking edx courses in economics and math, but the website requires me to pay $50 to take the verified course in order to receive a certificate that I can put on my CV. I just wanted to know if it’s worth it. Does it help my application in any way or is it a waste of time and money?

Thanks

it shows a little intellectual curiosity, but it is better to work hard on your school work and participate in ECs and community service.

I’m currently taking an aerospace engineering course and I really like it! I’m on the audit track because I am so busy this summer, but I was just genuinely curious about the topic and think of it as a fun challenge. I’m not totally sure if I’ll list it on my resume, but I might mention in one of my essays how it influenced my career choice and complemented a summer engineering course camp I went to. Don’t take them unless you think it will benefit your intellect/happiness rather than your resume! (as cheesy as that sounds)
