“Then why did colleges all of a sudden change their thinking?”

You can assume all the conspiracies you want sstewart. The fact is they didn’t suddenly change their thinking. In the late 60s, the HYPs needed to face reality that the best male students were no longer only applying to them. Coed alternatives were quickly draining the top HS applicants in an upward trend. This eased them all into co-education. Later, the trend continued with seeking out the best and brightest regardless of economic and ethnic background.

This progression has, in my opinion, led to their excellence today. With their unforeseen balooning of their endowments, they now can really compete financially with students who are being courted by their rivals who offer tons of merit scholarships.

Case in point: Yale was recently listed as one of the “Best Deals” in higher education despite its $50K cost to wealthy families.

So sstewart, continue your Quixotic venture looking for this “hidden thing”. The HYPs are moving along oblivious to your conspiratorial theories.
