So in high school we had to join stupid clubs and show that we were "active" to college admission officers. Do these kind of club activities matter to employers? For example, if I were vying for a software engineer job at Google/Cisco, would it matter if I were in CSUA or Hackers at Berkeley? Or is it basically just about your GPA/internships?

Do these kind of club activities matter to employers? No.

Or is it basically just about your GPA? Yes!

Depends on the job. For your job, nah. For business related jobs, most definitely yes.

I’ve always thought of extra-curricular activities in college as self-enrichment, especially when you have total control over all your time and are not forced by your parents/teachers… if you treat them the same way as if you are still in high school, you will suffer at Cal ^^

Extracurricular helps build your resume during your freshmen/sophomore year when you don’t really have any legit positions. They can be good things to bring up during interviews (if applicable). You can also use them as an opportunity to network! At the end of the day, your internships will probably matter more.

I definitely agree with you that at some point, internships/your GPA will matter more than clubs you’ve been part of. However, having some extracurricular activities would make you a more well-rounded candidate (imo). Plus, it’s for interest sake haha.

When you graduate, clubs don’t matter UNLESS it’s something like a team engineering event/competition and you are applying to an engineering job. The 2 things employers look for on a resume are 1) GPA and 2) Internships.
