do employers care more about gpa or courses taken?

I know the courses you take are very important, but what about first time interns? At this level, pretty much everyone knows nothing about their major, so wouldn't it be better for an employer to look at GPA since that would be a better measure of potential or general competence? After you graduate, at least you can be hired based on the courses you've taken and what you know.

I'm asking this because I'm a little worried for my GPA this semester. Out of my 4 classes, 3 are Math/Phys/Engineering which I have solid A's in. The fourth class is a required humanities core, for which I took Microecon. I can't maintain my attention during class and the material is very boring to me. I've done all the homeworks and do whatever is assigned but I just don't get it. At the rate I'm going now I think I'll end up with a B-, putting my semester gpa around 3.6-3.7. Although not a horrible GPA, my cume so far is a 3.9 and since I'm still early on in my degree one bad semester can really drag down my cume.

So when I apply to internships in the near future, will employers look only at my GPA first? Or will they usually look over my transcript and see that all my major courses are A's? I hate core electives....

If you’re trying to get an engineering internship, 3.6 should be more than good enough, unless I’m missing something. At my school as long as you had a 3.0 you could take your pick of employers for interviews.

Employers care about what your capabilities are.

Doing well in courses relevant to them is key.

A high GPA demonstrates that you set a high standard of excellence for yourself. Your GPA is quite good for engineering.
