It depends on the school but the answer is probably no. My daughter takes language because she likes it, but it’s not a requirement.

in Florida you do if you don’t have two years of foreign language in high school

Depends on the school. Look up the degree requirements of any schools you’re considering.

That’s going to vary from school to school. Many schools require two years of a language from every student regardless of their major.

Look up the degree plans for the engineering major(s) at the schools that you want to apply and make sure you are looking at the full degree plan (120+ hours) that includes the core classes too and not just the engineering classes. Engineering majors at my university don’t have to do foreign language at my school. Our College of Natural Sciences requires that you do either 6 hours of foreign language or 6 hours of foreign culture and then our liberal arts college and a few others require strictly foreign language.

You should expect most colleges to require a language, at least for an year.

There are ways to get out of it. AP or IB credit with a certain score, SAT II score above a minimum or a placement test are some of the choices offered.

As others have said, it depends on your school. At mine, you’re only required to take a foreign language if you’re either getting a BA or your major otherwise requires it. If you’re getting a BS and your major doesn’t require any foreign language (can’t think of any that do require it, actually), then it’s your choice whether to take it or not. So, engineers only take a language if they want to.

Examples of different colleges’ foreign language requirements:

Required for all students (including engineering majors):
Yale: <a href=“Language Requirement | Center for Language Study”>Language Requirement | Center for Language Study;
USMA: http://www.usma.edu/clcrs/SiteAssets/SitePages/Publications/Language%20Placement%20at%20West%20Point.pdf

Not required for engineering majors, but required for most or all other majors:
Princeton: http://www.princeton.edu/ua/sections/11/
UCLA: http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/archive/catalog/2012-13/catalog/catalog12-13-41d.htm and http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/undergraduates/general-education-requirements/ge-for-students-who-entered-fall-2005-and-thereafter
USNA: http://www.usna.edu/LanguagesAndCultures/program.php (required for H/SS majors only)

Not required of any students, other than those whose majors have a specific foreign language need:

MIT: <a href=“Welcome! < MIT”>Welcome! < MIT;
