Do engineers need tablet PCs? What are differences between a tablet PC and a laptop + graphic tablet?

Thanks a lot

No, as I cant imagine any engineering programs that would be easier to use with a tablet.

No, only certain school’s require them. Big engineering schools like Virginia Tech, RPI, and maybe UC Berkeley require them. Check YOUR engineering website. If it doesn’t say then don’t get one unless you want fingerprints on your screen.

Thanks a lot. What about a graphic tablet (not a tablet pc) for note taking? Any comments?

No. A tablet may help, but in my opinion, it’s just usually not worth the price.

For the $$$ extra that I’ll need to get a Tablet PC, I can get enough notebooks to last me throughout college several times.

Pen and paper may have limitations, but it doesn’t fail. As for stuff that requires a computer, the type of input that tablets provide is usually insufficient.

Tablets are good if you need digital copies of drawings, but the only thing where you’d actually use that in engineering is probably organizing notes with diagrams. In those situations, it might be helpful to just scan them later or type them up while reviewing.
