Do freshman grades really matter?

My freshman grades were pretty poor, seeing as how I was living abroad in a country whose language I couldn't really speak well. Grades were scored out of ten, and I had about an eight or seven average. Would colleges take this into account?

depends on the school, some schools completely disregard freshman grades.

Colleges should grant you some leeway because of the language barrier - and they'll look highly upon the experience of living and studying abroad. Make sure your GC includes a note explaining the reason you had difficulty, and you should be fine.

And Narcissa is right - many schools don't look at freshman grades, or don't place much weight on them, because they recognize that the person you are at 14 is very different from the person you are at 18. As long as your grades have increased since then, it will speak well to your academic ability.

a lot of schools actually look for a progression in grades, and if you did poorly in freshman year and then steadily got better and better grades throughout high school, that is a HUGE plus for admission. i know i got all Bs and one C freshman year (i was in boarding school, and in an attempt to **** off my parents i got bad grades... i was 14, the age that epitomizes stupidity) and from then on out, i have received all As and one B in both AP and honors classes. take it as an advantage, not a disadvantage.

I think that taking classes in a language in which you are not fluent definitely makes a difference and I wouldn't worry about your grades for that reason. However, I don't believe that this is true overall re. freshman grades. For regular folk who just messed around freshman year, it's a problem. After all GPA's are not just calculated based on 3 years.....Sure, they may cut you some slack, but this site is full of people with perfect gpa's who are concerned that they won't get into tough schools......Which does not mean that they won't get in, but you get my drift........

Schools will look at it, but if your grades have improved they will take that into account. They will see that your grades improved and that will help you get into the school.

Thanks everyone, that's a relief.
