Do full-time students owe taxes, or do they get a return?

I had a work-study job at my university last year, and I had federal income tax withheld. I made under $3000 on my job. I'm claimed as a dependent on my parents' tax return, so I don't qualify for Earned Income Credit. Therefore, the 1040EZ I'm filing now says I still owe taxes. I thought that all full-time students can get refunds from the federal income tax withheld if they file their tax returns? How does this work out? Do I get a refund even if the tax form says I owe taxes? Or am I going to be charged more taxes if I file my tax return?
I heard from other students that they got their refunds back. So should I expect to get a refund even though the tax I owe exceeds the federal tax withheld on the 1040EZ? I am using the IRS e-file for online filing. Thanks.

How much of a refund you get depends on how much money you made. Just because you’re a full time student doesn’t mean you automatically get your income tax refunded. You do not get a refund if the form shows you owe taxes, however, if you made under 3000 you should get your taxes back, so you might be doing something wrong. You should have a friend who’s done this before check how you filled out the form, or use another website and see if it comes out the same. Check your work.

Remember too that if you owe taxes, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t file a return. If you have an income, you’re over 18, and you don’t file a return you’re technically breaking the law. It sucks to owe taxes, but welcome to life. In this case though, you must have made an error.

Also, since I’m a dependent on my parents’ tax return, do I have to file my taxes with them, or just file on my own? Thank you very much for your advice.
