Do girls really have it tougher than guys?

HOLY **** it’s Millancad.

Hey… they chose to want to defend the country. It’s their right.

I didn’t create the list, though. Just to clear it up if anyone thinks I did.

Yeah, which man hasn’t enjoyed having privilege over himself?

This is from pretty long ago, but honestly? I like shopping but shaving ****ing sucks so hard. And would you like having to wake up an extra 30min-1hr every single day just to make your hair look nice? Yeah, I don’t think so.

Also, just to get in on the lovely period discussion, my cramps were once so bad I practically fainted (collapsed onto the floor and was white as a sheet). The nurse had to come get me and practically carry me to her room, where I lay down with a heat pack for like three hours. I missed class because of my ****ing period.

And also this discussion has mainly been focused on America or 1rd world industrialized western countries. But it’s important to remember that for most women on this earth, life is so much harder than it is for men. And I don’t just mean societal pressure to look nice, which is obviously significant but a lot more subtle than female circumcision and other such issues.

I’m so luck to be a guy, because I never have to shave!!!

^and we can’t be circumcised either!
^^Also, missing class wouldn’t be a big deal if you stayed in the kitchen.

Lovely sense of humor you’ve got there. Want to throw in a few racial slurs while you’re at it? Start a homophobic rant?

I’m assuming you’re trying to be sarcastic re: the circumcision comment. Try looking up “female circumcision” before carrying on in your spectacular privilege-denying fashion. It’s called female genital mutilation now, if that gives you a clue as to how violent the process can be. (This goes for everyone in this thread, since many seem to be ignoring inequalities in the world at large.)

Oh god I need to stop accessing my bookmarks while drunk.

^If it hurts, don’t do it.

It’s definitely more fun being a girl because you get to look pretty and go shopping etc… but it’s. also. hard because there’s so much pressure to keep up with looking good and always comparing yourself to other girls wondering if you’re pretty enough or not being completely. satisfied. with ur body…
There’s also having to shave (which I normally skip during the winter :p)childbirth. and cramps which are like HELL for I would miss school BC the pain is so excruciating. I feel like dying
.
but I’ve learned how to take ibuprofen /advil before the pain kicks in so it’s less painful :)

As a girl who wants to join the military, this really ****ed me off. That’s not your decision to make, nor do you probably have any idea what you’re talking about. The military today is very different from the Vietnam-era military everyone always envisions. It’s much more specialized and relies much less on brute force (I do not disagree that this is still necessary, but there are certainly ways to contribute without beating down doors and crawling through mud… which only a small percentage of the military does nowadays anyway).

EDIT: This is in reference to almost there. My quote didn’t show up.

LOL look at all the girl ranting on here.

MAN UP

jk. obviously, that doesn’t apply to girl. LOL.

this is a freakin public forum, i don’t get why people take this forum so seriously.

and up until recently, girls can’t even serve in combat units on the front lines xD

that may be changing.

but in all seriousness, there are pressures on both sides. make the best of what you got in life… FOOLS.

Have you seen the statistics for the number of women in the U.S. army who are raped by male U.S. soldiers? its something like 1/3 of all women have been raped with 90% of them reporting being sexually harassed while in the army. The rapists often have little to no punishment and if anything the victim often gets demoted.or forced to continue working with her attacker. Women are more likely to be raped than to be killed by enemy fire in Iraq. There was also a girl who died of dehydration because she didn’t want to get out of bed to get water because she was afraid of getting raped. How on earth is this a good environment for women? What exactly are we gaining by allowing women to join that you wouldn’t have if there were more men that wanted to join? Nothing but since a lot of people have smartened up and realized that the majority of the time joining the army isn’t going to be very beneficial to them, there aren’t enough people joining and they need bodies.

Everyone does realize they don’t actually conscript anymore, right?

^ …So your solution is to bar women from the military all together? I mean, every single woman in the military chose to be there.

On the topic of women in a draft, I think women should be eligible. Personally, I don’t really care that I’ll have to register and women don’t, but if we’re aiming for gender equality, it’s only right. Women don’t have to go into combat (and currently aren’t even allowed to have a combat assignment, although the military is playing with this), but there are so many auxiliary roles that are necessary and women can fill.

And how is this the woman’s fault? Instead of seeing this as a reason for women not to join the army, I see this as a reason to reform our military’s regulations. Punish rapists like hell, crack down on sexual harassment, and make sure the women feel safe within their own ranks. This along with time for men to get used to the idea will bring these statistics down. Also, the last bit of your sentence might have more to do with the fact that women aren’t allowed on the front lines, where most of the killing happens…

A) Don’t understand the second part of your sentence (if there were more men that wanted to join).
B) Erm, equality? Duh?

“Instead of seeing this as a reason for women not to join the army, I see this as a reason to reform our military’s regulations.”

Do you honestly think this is going to happen anytime soon? The thing is enemy soldiers have been raping women at war since they’ve had wars. If it isn’t our female soldiers getting raped it is civilians at whatever country we’re attacking. This isn’t going to stop especially considering the quality of people that are currently joining the U.S. army. You typically aren’t getting the cream of the crop. You’re getting more poor uneducated people who are just trying to find a way out. They’re now allowing waivers for felons to join the army. So you’re giving someone who has violent tendencies a gun and combat training. These people are all going to be more likely to rape and harass women combining that with the fact that there are very few ways to have a healthy relationship in the army and there’s a lot of stress they need a sexual release. And as a bonus they get a power fix (which people who are in the military are more likely to enjoy).

And equality isn’t the goal when you’re fighting a war the goal is to have the strongest army (which would be stronger if every women fighting was replaced with a man) and to win.

What real change comes immediately? Seriously. Imagine the terrible world we’d have if every activist in history had taken that stance.

We’re not talking about enemy soldiers…

You don’t think a female soldier could defend herself against a civilian?

Such confidence you have in the army, such respect you have for soldiers. Even if it were true that the majority of people entering the army are “poor [and] uneducated,” that’s not how they end up AFTER spending some time in Boot Camp and Basic Training (honestly not sure if they’re the same thing; point stands, though).

I don’t even know how to respond to this…

Wars aren’t fought based on physical strength anymore. They’re based on intelligence and strategy; things women don’t lack. The “strongest” thing they would have to do is carry a gun or run, both of which I don’t see women having a problem with. Besides, basic training I’m sure would make women just as fit as the men in her troop.

“What real change comes immediately? Seriously. Imagine the terrible world we’d have if every activist in history had taken that stance.”

They have no reason to change. It is a system that is beneficial for the guys in charge.

“We’re not talking about enemy soldiers…”

No but we’re talking about soldiers that are abroad raping women. they’ve always done this and they always will

“You don’t think a female soldier could defend herself against a civilian?”

I didn’t say female soldiers were getting raped by civilians. I said that the male soldiers can and will rape female civilians if given the opportunity although it is more convenient to rape the women in the next tent.

“Such confidence you have in the army, such respect you have for soldiers. Even if it were true that the majority of people entering the army are “poor [and] uneducated,” that’s not how they end up AFTER spending some time in Boot Camp and Basic Training (honestly not sure if they’re the same thing; point stands, though).”

I’m saying that they aren’t America’s brightest and they are more likely to commit crimes without considering the alternatives.

"Wars aren’t fought based on physical strength anymore. They’re based on intelligence and strategy; things women don’t lack. The “strongest” thing they would have to do is carry a gun or run, both of which I don’t see women having a problem with.
then why have a physical requirement? the gear and everything they carry is very heavy and they have to carry that for hours. And even they aren’t pretending that physically men and women are equal. The physical test requires that women can do at least 17 push ups in two minutes men have to do 40 for the two mile run men have to run it in under 16 minutes and 36 seconds women have to do it in under 19 minutes and 36 seconds. If they are equal why have different requirements?

First, you don’t normally march around every day carrying heavy things in the army. Maybe occasionally, but its not a daily occurrence by any means. As to the differences in physical testing, I agree that it is not necessarily fair to have different requirements and there is discussion of it being reformed. The idea behind it, however, is that because women are naturally less physically strong than their male counterparts, the test measures how fit a woman or man is BASED ON THEIR GENETICS. By making women comply to men’s standards, which I am completely for before you jump on me, they actually have to outperform their male counterparts because they are starting at a biological disadvantage.

One other thing I thought I’d mention - the military is not at a shortage for soldiers nor are soldiers necessarily the bottom of society. Actually, there has been an overall dramatic increase in people joining up since 9/11. Also, being in the army can be very beneficial, especially if one becomes an officer - they are being recruited by high powered companies and many of the most powerful corporate executives were once officers in the military.
