Hi, I was accepted into cal poly’s school of agriculture and I am already thinking about changing majors, maybe to something in science or engineering.
My question is, if I complete 1-2 quarters at Cal poly and get good grades in some of the required courses for the major I want to change to as well as my current major, can they still reject my request because I wouldn’t qualify if I originally applied to that major? Or do they only consider my college work and gpa?
The reason I ask this is because I am not certain what I want to do with my life yet and I want the option to be versatile. If good college grades is all I need to change majors, then I believe I possess the potential to do it at cal poly.

I’m pretty much asking if my high school transcript will be a deciding factor in changing majors.

My son changed majors within the College of Engineering. His high school transcript wasn’t considered.

Do they review your high school records when you are changing colleges?

Bumpity bump bump

One of the condition for major change is that you need to have HS academic qualifications required for your intended college as if you are a first time freshman applicant.

In other words, if you want to change from college of ag to college of engineering, your HS academic records need to be good enough such that Cal Poly would have admitted you as a new freshman to college of engineering the first time around.

This is done to prevent students gaining from admissions to Cal Poly through less competitive college (and with lower HS grades) and then changing into more competitive colleges such as engineering and architecture.

So if one gets excellent grades for 2 quarters, that is completely
Shot down if their high school transcript doesnt complement it?

I think after 2 quarters they only refer your college numbers, but someone else needs to confirm this.

Someone comfirm Appleteam!

[Change of Major Policy - Academic Programs - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](http://www.academicprograms.calpoly.edu/academicpolicies/Policies-Undergrad/Change-major.html)

“The majors for which the student was eligible at time of admission”

This is the one that is a bit ambiguous because it implies your HS grade is part of the requirements.

Even if you want to change withing your current college? This seems annoying because they keep your high school transcript against you forever.

Changing major within college doesn’t require HS grades because you are already admitted to that college as a freshman.

Changing between colleges might need HS grades.

But I suggest you call Cal Poly to clarify this or check it yourself when you visit CP in person by talking to the engineering office.

I always understood it was difficult to change majors at impacted schools. If you think about it, this makes sense precisely because of getting in with lower qualifications than the school you applied to in the first place. Engineering is extremely competitive - it should not necessarily (in my opinion) be that easy to get in if you got into a different college with lower stats. That is somewhat unfair to other qualified students who knew right away that they wanted to be in engineering, but were declined. Two quarters erasing your entire high school record does not seem equitable to me. That’s not even one full year of college. One or two YEARS maybe…granted, if you came is as an English major and switched to engineering, you might have trouble with taking the basic prerequisites, but then again - they fill the school in a balanced fashion to allow students to get the courses they need to graduate. If too many people take courses supporting a major they are not enrolled for, then it displaces other kids. Just wait - at some point you are going to need a class that is full and it will really annoy you when you can’t register because it is full.

By the way, I thought Agriculture had science majors in it…

However, I do agree with the advice - call the college and find out how it works. You should get a straight and accurate answer from them. You might try to reach someone in the Engineering college - I know for some schools, transferred majors are subject to the approval of the department granting the degree.

I understand. It isnt fair to get into an easy major then switch into a difficulty one an take a qualified applicants spot. However, if a student has a change of heart and wants to pursue a new career should have an oppurtunity as well. Im going to call admissions after school and will let you know what they say.

I have a friend who wants to change into the college of engineering from business. He spoke with the adviser who said that he just had to take certain amount of classes and maintain over a 2.5 GPA for two quarters. The adviser did not look at his high school GPA though. I think it depends on where you are switching from though.

Ok guys I just called admissions and I learned some stuff. She told me the basics like its easier to change within a college than it is to change out of a college. Then she told me that every college has their own criteria for people who want to change. Then I asked about the high school transcript thing and she told me she does not know exactly but she believes changing majors has NOTHING to do with the general admission process and once you are there, the college of your desire will set a new set of criteria for you to complete in order to change.
