Do high schools get notified about their students' college acceptances?

I'm guessing my high school will know which schools I apply to, but I'm wondering if they will find out about my acceptances. Would colleges report their decision to my high school? My high school knows where everyone is going; how would my school know that?

My son’s high requested that each senior let them know of their college acceptances as well as where they decided to attend.

No, there is no automatic reporting of acceptances or rejections to schools. Students self report this information, which means at least some of the time the data on which high schools rely for predicting success of future applicants to schools is not reliable.

The answer is going to vary from high school to high school, depending upon the relationship a guidance counselor or high school’s college office has with a specific regional admissions officer. For example, at my son & daughter’s public high school, many admissions officers from HYP and the like will routinely call the high school’s college office a week or two before EA and RD acceptances come out and say “Here’s who we are thinking about. Did we miss anyone?” Then, a day or two after EA and RD acceptances come out, an admissions officer will call and let the college office know who was accepted and deferred. At other high school’s that do not have such relationships, it’s up to the student to notify the high school.

As gibby says, sometimes there is a close relationship between a college and a GC or GC office and the GC finds out, but often they do not know.

I have heard some high schools refuse to send a final year-end transcript until the student gives them a copy of the acceptance letter.

^ why would a student request an end of year transcript be sent to a college they didn’t plan to attend, nevermind didn’t get into?

So, my high school would know where I’m going by my request that the final transcript to be sent to the college I would go to, and my high school would have no idea where else I got accepted/rejected if I don’t tell them and the school has no relations with the colleges?

Would my school talk about my college acceptances with my teachers? When high schools get the students’ college acceptances, do they notify the teachers or talk about it in their teacher meetings? Can the teachers know about the acceptances if the student didn’t tell them?

Why didn’t you just put this question in with your other one? Why does it matter what other people’s schools and teachers do? I think you are probably only concerned with yours. sounds more drama queen than substantial… for some funny reason. Why don’t you ask someone at your school?

If you’re thinking of playing games with ED, then know that it is highly likely the ED school will contact your HS to let them know they have accepted you ED. This then lets your GC know to not send out any more RD app info for you. Don’t even think about it.

Based upon the other thread, I think someone is trying to play games with the ED process.

If you’re playing games w/your GC, I hope he/she finds you out.

Yes, ED decisions are different and many HS do know about those. At our HS, students are required to bring in their actual ED letter (regardless of decision) before the GC will provide any further reports or transcripts. However, there are only a handful of students (in a class of 540) applying anywhere ED this year.

Apparently your high school doesn’t have peer pressure/image maintenance issues. Kids go to great lengths to support the elaborate lies they tell each other - photoshopping rejection letters into acceptances; taking time off school to attend Accepted Students Day; and convincing adminstrators that they will matriculate.

Obviously, deceiving GCs in any way is a bad idea, but the adolescent mind is a capricious device.

^^ That makes absolutely no sense to me! Yes, I understand that kids sometimes lie to each other about where they got in, but deceiving your GC to send a transcript to a college that rejected you doesn’t make sense. Doesn’t that mean that the GC ultimately doesn’t send the transcript to the college that the student WAS accepted to, and therefore the kid isn’t going to college at all?

At my daughter’s school (and probably elsewhere, no?), Naviance info depends on students’ reporting their admissions.

If you are accepted ED your guidance office will be aware, and that would stop them from helping you with applications to other schools, including sending the midyear transcripts that might be requested.

And at our HS pointless. All transcript requests are online and automated. The GC could look if they wanted to but why ? At that time of they year they are pretty busy.

To the OP, I too am concerned about where you are heading with these threads. It is critical for you to act openly and honestly with respect to your ED application. If you are trying to hide facts about your ED decision from teachers and your GC, you are setting yourself up for trouble both with your ED school and any others where you might apply.
