I attend CSUMB as a freshmen. I just completed my first semester and earned only a 1.30 GPA because I failed 2 classes. At my school, having a GPA under 2.0 puts you on academic probation. This is what it says for having a GPA under 1.5:
“Undergraduates on academic probation are subject to academic disqualification when:
As a freshman (fewer than 30 semester hours of college work completed) the student falls below a grade point average of 1.50 in all units attempted or in all units attempted at the campus where enrolled.”
So do you think I’ll be kicked out automatically? I’ve already contacted several people, including my academic advisor. I’m just waiting for their replies.
I think it means that they will not let you enroll in the spring semester. Disqualification is more serious that probation. There might be a petition process that could you allow you to continue. Your notification letter ideally would have explained what you are expected to do next, but your advisor will know the most about it.
There’s a very good chance that you can pursue a type of academic probation instead of disqualification. Freshman make mistakes sometimes. If you sign a contract to pull your academic performance up in the coming semester, they’ll likely give you the chance.
Alternatively, you can always attend a community college for a year or two and pull your grades up, then transfer back to a university.
I think it means that once you are on academic probation, if your cumulative GPA is below a 1.5, then you will be dismissed from the university. You were not on academic probation when you got the GPA of 1.3, so I wouldn’t think you would be academically disqualified. But if you remain below a 1.5 after next semester, you will be. So basically you have one more chance to pull up your GPA to at least a 1.5 (and ideally/eventually, above a 2.0 so you can get off academic probation).
This leads me to believe that there are different rules for students both on and off academic probation. If your GPA had been below a 1.0 in your first semester, then you would have been subject to academic disqualification.
That having been said, definitely go with whatever your advisor or whoever else you contacted tells you to do. And while your waiting for a response, make sure you come up with a solid plan on what you are going to do to improve your performance. If you are allowed to continue at this school, you will have to make some major improvements to improve your GPA and get off academic probation. Seriously consider what happened in your first semester that made you fail two courses. Was it too much partying and too little studying? Were you taking too many courses? Were you taking courses in a field that you’re not suited for (perhaps a change of major might help)? Mental or physical health issues? Being unprepared for college courses? Not taking advantage of resources like office hours, tutoring, help centers, etc? Now that you have a better idea of what to expect, make sure you choose your courses carefully and really buckle down to do well in them.
I appreciate all the help everyone. I’ve emailed 4 different people + some of my professors and I’ll keep you updated on what they say when they reply.
I don’t know how CSU works, but I go to a UC, and I was put on academic disqualification after my first quarter due to falling below a 1.5. In order to stay, I had to meet with an academic advisor, who laid out the terms in order for me to continue (getting good grades and pulling myself up to a 2.0).
