Hey everybody,
For those of you who have been accepted for '09 and for those who love Georgetown, Please tell me if I am the Georgetown type?
I'm in all AP/ Honors classes except for regualr math and I get A/A- in all except a B+ in one. I'm waiting for my SAT scores but they will probably at least a 650 on every section (hopefully!)
Anyway, I'm a junior and next year, I will be editor of my school newspaper, head delegate for Model UN and I am this year. I have been tutoring ESL students for three years. I have an art portfolio to submit to colleges and I intend of majoring in art/art history. Four years ago, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and I have started a support group in my county, I'm Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's inspirational keynote speaker for corporate events, and I'm really excited because I was invited to speak before the House of Representatives and meet with Senators in Washington D.C.this June on the topic of Stem Cell research.
My recomendations will be exceptional and my essay will be quirky.
I'm extremely liberal and politically active/savvy! I'm scared that going to a school in the South(NC) won't be good for me since I'm a liberal Democrat and a feminist.
I'm deciding between applying early either to Brown or to UPenn, but I am very interested in Georgetown and I'm spending the summer this year at UPenn for art.
Thanks for the input!

ignore the south(nc) comment as i put that and forgot to erase that on a Duke thread

you seem to be classic georgetown material. with your credentials you should have no trouble getting into to either school (penn or gtown). You'd fit right in on campus, no problemo... i can almost guarantee that youll find your niche there. Penn however, might not be too hot for you.
The fact that you are a liberal democrat will be to your benefit on such a campus as GU. While most liberal arts schools are left-winged as it is, GU (because of its location) tends to toe the line in that respect. I am a devout republican and i still found the political activism on campus very healthy and competitive. nothing harsh, as far as i know.
In the journalism aspect, Georgetown has 3 student run newspapers (i think, it might be four), all of which give different political and social aspects on news. I currently serve as the editor-in-cheif of my h.s. newspaper and will be writing for The Hoya or The Voice next year.
I, too, am debating between Penn and Gtown. I dont know how well you'll fit in at Penn though...
Dont get my wrong, its a fabulous school with a fabulous rep. But you seem to be more of the gtown DC type.
Ill be visiting Penn next week. I can give you the update later as to how politics etc are on campus. but i can say now that nothing beats gtown in terms of political activism; your in DC for cryin out loud! the opportunities are high in number

Dunno if this helps but...Georgetown has The Independent, The Hoya, and Blue & Gray as major newspaper publications. They also have other numerous literary publications. Its a really nurturing environment for liberals. They had the women's rights thing in DC last year and many of the students bussed over to take part. If you're into politics, you can run for GUSA as well as intern on the Hill. If you want to do anything international or politic/gov't related, Georgetown is it. They bring in the best speakers and have the best professors at the SFS for that kind of stuff. On a side note, my bro had SFS as his first choice, got in EA, then got into UPenn RD...chose UPenn because it was Ivy, even though it was less prestigious and competitive than SFS, realized he'd made a mistake and had to beg to get himself off the Williams waitlist, so he wouldn't have to go to Penn....BTW, Gtown will have just finished their new Performing Arts Theatre...by next fall. Good luck with your selections. Either way, make sure you visit both schools first.

FYI, Penn's "Daily Pennsylvanian" has long been recognized as one of the best student-run newspapers in the nation.

not to dissuade you or anything... but I was looking at Georgetown last yr and asked the representative at an information session about submitting slides/prints ( i plan on doubling studio art/english) and she told me that georgetown had some of the top programs in the nation but if art was what i was serious about pursuing then georgetown might not be the right place... i ended up not applying pretty much on the basis of her comment (otherwise the school is great), so if art is what you are serious about i would look into it a little further..
also, i'm not sure how much the art supplement would help in terms of admission (other than maybe setting you apart), whereas i think it does help a lot at other schools.. in so much, you're not going to get in b/c of it

i didn't apply to brown and wish i did b/c i've heard that they have a great co-op program with risd, (and john hopkins has one with MICA fyi). i was waitlisted at upenn and would be willing to bet that i wasn't flat out rejected because of my portfolio.. so i think that the slides will take you more places there, anyway, enjoy the summer program!

brinnaballerina- where are you going to school?

umm still trying to figure that one out!

i was pretty settled w. nyu b/c they have a really elite visual arts department, but it is in a separate college than the arts & sciences so i wouldn't be able to follow my plan of study there.. plus the program is pretty isolated from the rest of the university, which is good and bad, but i want to be able to take a liberal arts curriculum. so i've been thinking william & mary, which is a lot smaller but cute, and seems like it would be more traditional training... waiting out three waitlists, which also leaves unanswered questions. right now i'm doing all of these wickedly tacky self-portraits clad in various school sweatshirts to send out...

anyway, sorry to flood the g-town board about other schools but if you have any q's about fine arts departments at top tier schools shoot b/c i learned lots over the past yr

Xtrasweet You have written the same question on several diffrent threads? WHY?

she wants the question answered on several different threads?

Yes, Yale, Harvard, & Duke & ND I trink

no i was being sarcastic
you asked WHY shes writing the same question on several different threads

and i said because she wants the question answered on several threads

but no worries instead of making you feel dumb, i ended up being dumb
