So I’m 17 and I turn 18 this August. I saw on the Fafsa app that most people who don’t register for the Selective Service are ineligible for any Federal aid. Is this true? For that I guess I’ll put “yes”, but what really is the Selective Service? Do I have to sign up anyway in the future? Is it likely I actually get selected?
Thanks!
In order to be eligible for federal aid (Pell Grant or a student loan) you need to register for selective service. It is a law and this is a forcing function to make sure it happens. Even though there is a list of signed up people the last draft was in the Vietnam War.
No one has been drafted in the US since 1973. It is highly unlikely that you would ever be drafted.
And FWIW, there is no escaping registration. Your data are in the system somewhere, and you will get caught if you try.
Assuming you’re male, yes you have to sign up in the future anyway. There is currently no draft so you won’t get selected. You could also go to this site and submit your registration before filing fafsa since you are already at least 17 years and 3 months.
