Hi I posted this in both HMC and Rose Hulman forums since they are my top choices, as well as RPI. I've been looking at RPI and it seems like the Harvey Mudd of east coast.
GPA: Weighted ~4.5
Non Weighted ~3.8

SAT: took it twice, highest score is 1980, I plan to study like heck for my 3rd try
600 Reading
690 Math
650 Writing

ACT: I plan on taking ACT to see if that test is more for me

SAT IIs: I plan to take Math Level 2, US History, and Physics
Rank: Top 3 percent.

Completed/Currently enrolled AP courses: Euro History, Chemistry, Art History (Independent Study), Physics B, US History, Calculus BC, AP Lang and Comp

Senior Year (already planned) AP courses: US Gov, Comparative Gov, English Lit, French 4, Physics c, Prob and Stat

I also hope to take courses at my local community college (Linear Algebra and Differential Calculus). I don't know if this will also look better on my application

I think my weakest areas are SAT score and community service/extra curricular activities.

After reading some of the stats of people waitlisted this year, it would be difficult to say. Being from California helps the geographic diversity, so that is a plus. Recommendations, essay and Math SAT scores will make the difference IMHO.

I think if you can get your Math SAT score up into the 720+ range you should be a strong candidate for RPI. I’s also try to get a little more involved with community service. The rigor of your class work and class rank work strongly in your favor. Is that GPA on a 4.0 scale? If so, this is another strong factor in your favor.

yeah out of a 4.0 scale
hmm well for Community Service

Volcano, the mean SAT for RPI’s class of 2013 was 1354/1600 for R+M and about 1990/2400. So you are kind of behind the curve for two part SAT and right at the average for three part SAT. I could see you getting in but could also see you being rejected easily.

Looks like you are focusing on getting those scores up and that is a wise thing to do. Based upon current application numbers the Class of 2014 should have scores in the 1365 - 1375/1600 range. RPI is getting more competitive each year.
