Do I even have a chance? Mechanical Engineering

I was looking into applying for the spring of 2015, however my gpa is only a 3.5 after 54 hours. Will this be acceptable? I I made a C in psychology and it's really messed things up. I don't have time to retake for a better grade though.

Also, by the end of this fall, I will still need to complete University physics 2, but everything else is completed including an AutoCad class!

Currently, I am an engineers assistant at an oil and gas company. I have 4 years experience. I'm hoping the essay I write will be enough to convince them to overlook my average grades. I've retaken about 4 classes for higher grades. (It's not like I failed, I just wanted an A) so I'm not sure if that looks really bad or not.

I have a couple of letters of recommendation as well.

Questions:
Should I wait until my gpa is higher?
Should I just apply to Blinn and transfer later?
Is it possible to just get accepted into A&M and switch over to the major of my choice later??

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

P.s. I also looked into the Petroleum Engineering Program (which is what I do for a living) and there's no way I have a chance there.

@Zabbles You have a very interesting background. You should be proud of your accomplishments so far, while working full-time. You really should contact A&M directly and talk to them.

I suggest making an appointment with the nearest Prospective Student Center to you. http://admissions.tamu.edu/psc

They can give you a better idea of your chances. Also maybe help you arrange a visit to the College Station campus. When you apply the application form asks how many times you visited and going to the PSC counts as a visit.

We are a homeschooling family, so we are unconventional, too. Going to the PSC helped clear up many things for us. Good luck!
