DO I even have a Chance or should i just give up?

Hey guys,

I live in Canada and is currently in Grade 11. I am wodering my chances of getting into any of the top U.S university.

Here are my stats

GPA. -3.8 ( 7 A's out of 8 subjects) our school takes our best 8 subjects and calculate the average.

Rank- not too sure cuz the IB program I enrolled in is incorporated into a local public school but i guess taking into the difficulty of course into account , i should be about 5-10/ 140 IBers or 20/450 regulars

SAT- 2290 math (770), verbal (750), and writing (770)
SATII- Math I- 800, Math II-800. Bio- 780

AP- calculus- (maybe 4/5) taking it next year

courses:

IB HL English - 6
IB HL Bio-7
IB HL History- 7
IB SL math- 7 completed in Grade 11
IB SL Chem- 7
IB SL Mandarine- 7

TOk/EE expecting 2

total IB Score expected( ^^ if i keep up with the work) is probably around 40-43

ECs- i know comparing with others, mine doesn't look that impressing and is definately on the low side

ethnic: female chinese( I noe>< that hurts the chances since only a few international spots are allotted for asians and the competition is extremely fierce)

no final aid required( hope that would give me an edge)

What are my chances? I am really perplexed right now as to what i should choose as my top choice or should i even given U.S university a try. After look at all others' amazing stats and impressive ECs in the forums, I realize that mine is quite minimal.

And if i do apply, what is the school i am most likely to get in and which one should i apply as early admission ( commerce would be my interested field and ) and other suggestions would be helpful

Cornell
Dartmouth
U-Penn (Wharton business is too hard to get in....)
Northwestern
U-Mich
Columbia
Duke
Brown
South California

btw i heard that early admission adds the chance of getting in significantly?
=_= can some fill me up a little on that ? Is it really true? cuz 50% of my friends say that all early decision applicants are generally very well-rounded, therefore it's natural that early admission has a higher rate of acceptance.

haha ^^ i will stop rambling on. and please tell me the truth( personal encouragement is greately appreciated though )

thx alot !!!

Cornell-match
Dartmouth-match
U-Penn-match
Northwestern-safety
U-Mich-safety
Columbia-match
Duke-match
Brown-safety
South California-safety

Nice SAT scores btw. You should definately aim for 2300-perfect.

I'm no expert or anything, and I'm sorry to say it, but you're chances aren't THAT good.

I'd say Columbia, Upenn, and Duke are reaches (as they are for almost anyone), but I def. think you're a competitive applicant at those schools. Other than that, all the colleges are probably matches with SC being a safety.

Cornell-match
Dartmouth-slight reach/match
U-Penn-slight reach
Northwestern-match
U-Mich-safe match
Columbia-slight reach
Duke-slight reach
Brown-match
South California-safe match

You have an 80% chance of getting into an Ivy, so you shouldn't worry too much.

The girl is an international. Remember that.

Well, she's from Canada.
I believe at some schools, (I remember hearing it from a Columbia adcom), that Canadian applicants are considered for the most part with US pool. But I could be wrong...

I noe... >< now i just wish that i am an American Citizen and live right 10 minutes away from the campus of some IVY league university. But i guess it's already a fortune that i made to Canada since i originally come from China 5 years ago.

Are you kidding? Northwestern and USC are no one's safeties.

yeah i kinda agree. nowadays, the compeition is so tough that the chances of acceptane is like a game of chance.

nothing stands out too much in terms of EC's... but you should get into the majority of those schools since they are not HYPS.

oh ya, i'm a canadian senior waiting for decisions that are coming out in... 10 days!

Be cautious here. Even the absolutely top applicants - we're talking 2350+ SATs and Val or Sal - have no better than a 40% to 45% chance at schools like UPenn, Dartmouth, Columbia, and Duke. Kids with merely superb stats like you have at best a 30% chance.

With that said, I think Flippy has pretty much nailed your chances. I'd add a word of warning and say that Match, when used in context with an Ivy level school, means around a 30% chance, and Slight Reach means around a 25% chance. Of course, it also means that you're a very competitve, above average applicant. Average applicants have about a 10% chance.

My bet is you get into at least a couple of the more selective schools on your list and probably Cornell, Northwestern, UMich, and USC. Still, you might want to add a couple of safeties just in case.

Val = 45% statistical change at UPenn.
2350+ = more chance.

Val + 2350+ therefore should equal about 55%~ chance.

But that's assuming everything else is spectacular.

THx alot for all who have offered invaluable feedbacks and best luck for all those who are axiously waiting for acceptance letter.
Yeah, this game would be harsh and now i am better prepared to face the reality in case that I don't get accepted. Life wouldn't end if I don't get into Ivy League right? Anywayz, ^^ I am honoured to think myself as one of the competitive applicants in those application pool. I always think myself as those who would probably be put into the bottom 10% of the application files.

Btw, I am trying to get an internship within a company ( commerce is my foremost choice and i will most likey be applying for undergraute business program)and another one with a Psychiatrist ( My second choice of career) in our local hospical or a Bio-Chemistry Professor in local university. In assumption that I get the positions, I probably only will have time for one of them considering of all the heavy academic workload. Which one would work for the best of my advantage in terms of applying university next year?

Couple of things.. Brown is not a safety for almost anyone, so that first poster was basically out of his mind. Just kidding, but I think it's silly for you to even say "Do I even have a chance?" Of course you have a chance, but since you're not THAT much better than the average Ivy applicant, and you're an international, I'd say the Ivies are at least upper matches, although it's definitely not a good idea to apply to another school at Penn if you really want to go to Wharton. Apply to the school you want to go to, if the school sees your internships and stuff and thinks you want to transfer into Wharton, you're busted.

but i mean then i can get the position in the hospital right, and thus i don't show strong interest in Wharton, so can i surreptiously apply to , say an "underpopulated" faculty then somehow miraculously transfer to Wharton? ( well, all that, i am assuming that i will be admitted in the first place)

Transfers to Wharton are very hard, even from the main CAS college. You have to take courses with (no offense) kinda toolish Wharton kids who might screw the curve up for you and you have to get about a 3.6-3.7 to get in. This also depends on space/availability.

k then, probably i should just give up on Wharton alltogether.. aiya of cuz it is the best undergrauduate business school in the whole country, maybe in the whole world. but how about my those other choices? which one would you guys think i should seriously apply as ED? I am confused now hearing different comments about safties and reaches. Definately a tyro.

You'd have a solid shot at ED Wharton. The only way to not have a chance at a school is to not apply.

If you're interested in either undergrad business or an undergrad degree in psych with a pre-med emphasis, you might want to take a look at Washington University in St. Louis. The undergrad Olin business school was ranked in the top 15 in the US, the pre-med program was ranked #2, and the school overall is ranked 11th in the US by US News, ahead of Cornell, Northwestern, and Brown. It's a darn good school, and everything I've heard says that the kids who go there really like it. Also, it would be a bit easier to get into than Wharton.
