I am a rising senior of 2010 and I have a sh**ty high school record.

1.) My GPA is ridiculously low. It's so low that it's actually a form of shame and embarrassment for not only me but my parents. I will not post specific numbers. Just know that I rank bottom 50%. Yes, it is that bad. And no, my school isn't just full of smart kids. We probably have more dumb kids if anything.

I'd like to note that I do not consider myself unintelligent. As a matter of fact, I believe my intelligence alone may even be within the top 10% of my school (and no, this isn't a form of arrogance). Alas, Colleges don't care about that. They care about GPA's.

My parents believe that if I can achieve a high SAT, SAT II, and ACT score, it may just be enough to balance my low GPA. I'm not sure if that's how colleges work however.

2.) I have no special records for my extracurricular activity. I used to be in the swim team and now I work as a Lifeguard at the local YMCA. I have been a part of several different clubs and after-school activities, but due to moving several times through out my high school career, I never achieved a leadership position in any of those clubs. I have never won any special recognitions or any awards from school.

The only special thing that stands out is that I have played the piano for 8 years and now I play at my local nursing home for the elders for community service. Other then that, I have nothing interesting. I have several hours here and there, but nothing special.

3.) For the SATs I plan on achieving a minimum score of at LEAST 2200+. I plan to study my butt off during the summer to achieve that score (more info in the SAT prep forum). Otherwise my score as of now is probably floating between 1600 - 1900.

Community College is not an option for me. The minimum that my parents and I want is at least Virginia Tech.

Not that easy, bro. I got about a 2200 with a bit of studying. My original was about 2100. After you cross 2000, it is really hard to increase your score by 100s of points.

Or you could just be a better studier than I am, who knows. Just going off of personal experience.

@noimagination: I told you that I rank bottom 50%. Again, I won’t post my exact GPA, but I will tell you that it’s under 3.0 (for all 3 years of my high school career).

I define minimum as what I rank to be the bottom of my College hierarchy. Virginia tech is the very bottom. UVA is next. MIT and Cal Tech is at the very top.

@ChasingStarlight: I’m fairly certain of my abilities at this point. As of now, I think it’s only a matter of “fine tuning” my SAT skills, if you know what I mean.

oh come on mr. Mikozee… don’t be afraid to post your gpa. After all, we are trying to help you, not taunt you. You’re not ranked 599/600, no? lol

And of course there are alternative ways to get into Virginia Tech… it just takes a little more time and alot more patience in order to blossom… ;)

christ. beggars can’t be choosers. I have no idea why you feel so entitled even though you are doing horribly in school.

And don’t pooh community colleges. It would probably be good for you. If you decide to flounder around there too at least you won’t be wasting as much money.

Why not? We have no idea who you are, and I doubt if anyone here cares.

That’s trouble. You can still get in somewhere; here’s a possibility:

Arizona State: ~20% have <3.0 GPA

I’ll look for more potential schools.

You need a new definition. Virginia Tech is an astronomical reach for you - only 2% are <3.0. UVA is exceedingly, massively unlikely. You can spend the cash on applications if it amuses you, but your chances at MIT/CalTech hover somewhere very near absolute zero. They accepted ZERO students in the bottom half of their graduating classes.

yeah we cant really judge what youre chances are if youre giving us that big of a gap.
2.9 GPA and a 2200 will get you into respectable schools.
1.3 and a 1700 wont.

I admire your will but i highly doubt you have a shot at any of the top 100 schools. 1600-1900 is awfully broad. To break the 2000 threshhold let alone 2200 is extremely difficult especially if you are scoring in the range you are right now. Sub 3.0 is a killer and Virginia tech will be a significant reach. MIT and Cal tech you can forget. Also remember that the sub 3.0’s that get into va tech are athletes

Get a reality check. You are applying for hyper competitive colleges where students have worked hard for the last four years of their lives.

Don’t BS yourself into thinking that you can somehow achieve a high SAT score out of nowhere, even with studying. It’s a Standardized test, and the chances are that you won’t, no matter how brilliantly you seem to think yourself as. MIT and Cal Tech as reaches?

Don’t worry… we all have done stuff that we thought to ourselves before, we would never do. Sometimes, mediocre circumstances forces some of us to downgrade our expectations to where to go for colleges…

-i.e. my soph year: I thought I still had a good match to UCLA. I wasn’t open to the idea at all of a UCR of UCM. Fast forward one year later… now I’m desperately trying to get my act together (college classes, etc…) in order to admit into UCI. and at a bad time too… in this middle of teh economic mess… now, I would be more than happy if I get accepted to UCR or UCM…

Community college has to be ONE of the options for you. No, not the only option. But accept the fact it’s possible…Work hard & smart in community college, you’ll easily (I think) transfer to Virginia Tech…

I’m rockin’ a 2.5 GPA, with a ~2000 SAT score, 3rd (Maybe 4th) Quarter, above average EC’s, etc. Basically I found a decent university that offers automatic admission based on SAT scores. It’s a big state school with several solid undergrad programs.

i agree with the other posters, stop being so choosy if you did not work hard during high school

People gain the fruits of their labor, no labor means no fruits for you mister!

Dont project a SAT score and we need a GPA to give you a real prospect

WE NEED REAL NUMBERS!

Community college is probably your best option, and dont be so anal about it…you should feel lucky you even have the opportunity to go to some college

Your best bet is to go to a community college and transfer into VATech

Yeah seriously, don’t be a snob. You can’t afford to be one. Go to community college and then transfer to a good public university in your state. Also knock it off with this crap:

i know it would seem like a nightmare to most on this site, but
CC is not the end of the world. I know respectable people who went to CC and then led good lives. You’ll have to work harder, but it’s not the end of the world.
