Do I even have a shot with a 3.4 GPA?

I really want to go to Georgetown in 2012, but it seems my low GPA will hold me back.
I know GPA isn't everything, but it's pretty much the main component. Should I even bother applying?

Here are some of my stats:

ACT: 34 Writing: 11
SAT II: US History: 800 World History: 780 English: 770
GPA: 3.4 UW (Freshmen year killed it with a 3.0, upward trend)
Course Rigor:
4 years of English (AP English 5)
4 years of Math (AP Stats) Yet to take it.
4 years of Science (All Honors/Advanced classes) Yet to take AP test.
4 years of Foreign Language (Honors)
4 years of Music (First chair)
4 years of History (APUSH 5, AP Comparative 5)
3 years of Religion

Ethnicity: Foreign Born.
High school: One of the most competitive Jesuit schools in the country.

EC's (Main ones I focused on) There are more, but that's standard for everyone on here lol.
1. 4 years of student congress (President, Semi-Finalist (Top Ten in Country?) Politics?
2. President of Ethnicity Club
3. 4 years of Percussion, 7 years of piano.
4. 350+ service hours at one nationally ranked hospital.

FA?: No.

I really want to get in some sort of Business/Politics etc and I feel Georgetown would be the place for me. Should I even bother applying?

Thanks in advance for the input. I greatly appreciate it.

Yes. Apply.

Looks like you’ve taken a solid mix of classes, and have been involved in a number of extracurricular activities. All good.

As far as coming from a competitive Jesuit high school - great. Know that thousands of other Gtown applicants do as well.

Tip: Don’t dull admissions with a long list of “I’ve done this, I’ve done that” - it won’t get you very far. Focus on the strengths you’ll bring to Gtown as a student, and why you deserve a place among the class of 20whatever (hint, hint: focus on writing a kick-butt essay that’s gonna make you stand out from the crowd).

As I’m sure you know, colleges look at more than just GPAs. Nonetheless, GPAs are still an important factor in the overall admissions process. A 3.4 does put you at the lower end of the Gtown “sweet spot,” but not low enough to discourage you from applying altogether. Generally, the bulk of offers are extended to students in the 3.7 - 4.0 range. However, your strong ACT score adds to the mix and should definitely help.

Again, focus on writing a killer essay and go for it.

Good luck,
Gtowngrad

Thank you so much for the information. This was exactly the type of advice I was seeking. I’m definitely going to apply, might as well, right?

Thank you on the advice for the killer essay. I wasn’t planning to include a long grocery list of EC’s I’ve done, but now I’m DEFINITELY not going to take that route. I will be sure to utilize the advice you’ve given me. Thanks again.

You should apply! Georgetown is a school that wants unique/ all rounded students…i know of kids in my senior year who got rejected with 2400 SAT, 2380 and so on but a lot of kids with lower GPAs and SAT scores (1850-2000) who got in because they had a lot to offer, make ur essay amazing, and prove to the admissions team that you will make a solid contribution to the incoming class. good luck, and STOP doubting yourself cos ur clearly talented :)

Thanks for the input and I’ll try my best on the essay. That’s still kind of discouraging that kids with 2400’s get rejected, but I understand the total picture is important.
