What I specifically mean by the title is if I need a very specific computer stylized to the needs of my prospective major - mechanical engineering?

I'm currently using an year old MBP and if anyone's interested in it's specs to recommend, they follow:
[ul]
[]OS X Version 10.7.4 (Lion)
[]2 GHz Intel Core i7
[]4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
[]15", Intel HD Graphics 3000, 384 MB
[li]500GB in-built HDD. (200 GB used)[/li][/ul]

Any suggestions as to if I need a specific laptop for my major, or if I'm fine with what I have?

You should be fine, although depends on the school.

I’ve never had any program that requires anything more than a decent (average) laptop. Something that can run ProE/Solidworks/etc is good, but a 2 ghz i7 will handle that just fine for what you’ll likely be using it for.

You’ll want something that can run Matlab and such. But that doesn’t take a ton either.

Biggest issue might be some software not running on OSX, but if you can boot Windows, you should be good.

@Tizil7 Your current laptop will easily meet your needs for the next 4 years. (If you can make it last that is). As said before, just ensure that you install Windows either via Boot-camp or via Parallels.

P.S- I know you must be dying to get a new laptop, just for the sake of unwrapping the plastic covers :D.

Ask your school if they have requirements.
