Do I have a balanced college list?

@albert69 yup lol

Yes, UMass is low tuition/super high fees, with results similar to most other States once you add them up. Just beware that “full tuition scholarship” means nothing if it’s not “full tuition and fees” . Some made that discovery sadly too late :frowning:

@MYOS1634 Nice catch, I would have probably completely missed that! Thanks :slight_smile:

That’s bizarre, but here it is: https://www.umass.edu/newsoffice/resources/about-umass

STUDENT CHARGES: UNDERGRADUATE IN-STATE
Tuition: $1,714. Required Fees: $11,516. Total: $13,230
Room: $5,563. Board: $4,374. Total: $9,937
Total All Charges: $23,167
(2012-13)

“Tuition” alone is a meaningless number, then. It’s a political thing, so legislators can say they didn’t raise tuition, and just not talk about the fees. (and this is from 2012-13; fees have gone up nearly $1000 since then) But just because politicians do that, doesn’t mean that you should. Note that the fees are ‘required fees’. You should start thinking of “tuition” as the whole $14,000 tuition + fees.

Actually, unless you’re planning to live at home and commute, the relevant figure is the $25,674 cost of attendance on the web site. However accurate your school’s Naviance is, the university’s own web site is more reliable still :slight_smile:

@hs2015mom Yes, I completely agree what really matters is the total amount on the website. However, the tuition is still $1,714, which is what my school’s Naviance says, so it is completely reliable. I intended to only state the tuition anyway, which is never the full story.

The fee warning is a very good one. We heard similar from someone who works at U Mass.
