Do I Have a Better Chance of Being Hit by Lightning?

I made a chances thread a long time ago, but I've made some improvements so tell me what you think.

African-American female, Detroit public school senior
Major: Chemistry and Math hopefully

GPA: 4.0 UW
Rank: 1/209

3 APs (Chem, Calc AB, English), 5 honors courses
My school offers 6 or 7 APs, but I'm a math/science person and there are only two math/science APs. I think the most APs that somebody has taken in my year is 4. I will have 4 years of math, science, English, social studies, and a language when I graduate.

ACT

Highest Subscores: (32E, 31M, 30R, 33S) giving me a 32 composite.

Highest Composite: 29 (32E, 29M, 30R, 26S) I think I got a 9 on the essay.

SAT: 1300/1920 (620CR, 680M, 620W) 8 Essay

Subject Tests: 730 Math 1, 730 Math 2, 650 Chem

AP: Chem 4

ECs are just average I guess.

I think my essays were very good, but my recommendations might be kind of monotonous/repetitive because all my teachers have to follow a format. They all said really nice things about me though.

So what are my chances for Harvard, Yale, Penn, Northwestern, and Stanford? I've already been accepted to Michigan.

THANKS FOR READING!!!

eh...chances aren't too great for hys...for penn and northwestern, slightly better...the ec's are alrite but the SAT/ACT is gonna hurt you more then yer urm status will help you

Your SAT score is too low for most of the schools you listed. Most of the Ivies usually accept people with 2100+. Also, your EC's are a little weak.

I thought that Stanford and Harvard take the highest subscores. Even if I have a 32 with my highest subscores, that's still too low? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I think they take highest subscores for the SAT but not the ACT. In any case, you have a shot - URM status helps a ton.

nothingbutthebest, i believe you are right about the way stanford does its act calculations. your sat score is a little low, however you are number one in your class, which still means a lot.

URM status does not help as much as everyone here thinks. The ivies on average reject 75% of URM applicants, higher for HYPS I believe.

That said you have an excellent GPA and solid ACT for these schools. ECs are weak but I think you have a real shot at all and I think you'll be in at Penn. If you're low income, your chances are even better.

You have an excellent chance at all.

You Asked: Do I have a better chance of being hit by lightning?

Answer: Except for Penn...Yup. I personally know an African American female with a 2250 SAT, nearly 4.0 GPA, and incredible ECs. So, despite what some URMs may believe, you still need to be a strong candidate to make it to the top. Suze had an excellent point with the 75% statistic.

The only weakness is the ECs. There are not a lot of URM vals. She also has the average ACT for these schools which is also good for a URM candidate. I do think she'll get into some of these schools if the apps and recs are good.

The fact that you're a female African American applying for a math or science program will help you quite a bit. I would recommend applying - you're already in Michegan, so worse comes to worst, you'll go to Michegan, which is already a great school.
Good luck!

I guess the only thing really hurting me is my ECs. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it will kill my chances.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

I heard of an African American girl who got a 32 from Mississippi and got into Harvard.. even though my brother who had much higher scores and better extracurriculars (while both had equivalent scores) did not get in the same year as she did. Unless you didn't check that you were African American, you have a pretty good shot.
