I have a really low gpa but according to my school's naviance, CWRU accepts people with similar stats as mine. I'm planning on applying early action. Should I apply at all? I don't think that I stand a chance but my school's acceptances history says otherwise :/

CWRU is becoming more selective each year, so mean GPA and SAT scores continue to rise for incoming freshman. Considering you are interested in CS, what is your math SAT/verbal SAT? Have you taken any SAT2 tests and if so scores? Do you have any AP scores yet to report? Your community service experience is a great addition.

Regardless of grades/scores - your plan to apply early action is very smart. While overall acceptance rates at CWRU dropped to under 40% this year (lowest in its history I believe), early action has always had significantly higher acceptance rates. Not sure where you live, but would encourage you to make a trip to the school, meet with an admissions officer and be very clear about your interest in attending. CWRU would like to get its %yield higher, so admissions is wanting to weed out applicants (even strong applicants) who are applying to CWRU as a safety school, but have no real interest in attending.

Definitely apply EA. As Steve26 said, Case is becoming more selective and likes to accept applicants that show interest and really show intention of attending. Visit, interview, and make contact with your regional admissions officer. If you are deferred to RD you will have an opportunity to submit an additional statement of any new developments. Don’t become discouraged…my D was deferred then accepted- with a higher GPA, but lower test scores than you. Good luck!

Wow guys thank you so much for the feedback. I honestly expected responses like “Reach school” or “wow your gpa sucks” haha.

My math is 710. My CR is 690. I’m retaking the SAT on 10/5.

I don’t really know if Case will visit my school since it’s an international school. But yeah, I’ll definitely apply early action.

And unfortunately I haven’t taken any SAT 2s and I don’t plan on taking them - I didn’t take the AP courses that correspond to the subject tests. And unfortunately… that makes me an even less competitive candidate.

Agree with frenchhorn. You absolutely have a chance. Higher SATs will help - good luck - and stick with your plan for early decision.

See if you can get a phone or Skype interview with someone from the admissions office. Let them know your interest is more than dropping a no-admission-fee application on the Common App.

I don’t think your SATs are horrible at all. Your math 710 puts you within the middle 50% of enrolled freshman for 2012. 33% of students had scores under 700 in math. For CR, your 690 puts you almost at the top of this middle 50%. Only 34% had scores of 700 or above. Having said that, it would be helpful to you to raise them, if possible. Higher SATs never hurt. Good luck!

Yes, yes, yes apply! But please make sure you have some contact with the school…either emails or phone calls. I am convinced my D was accepted because she visited, interviewed, corresponded with her rep., etc… And continued to stay in touch after her deferral. Just looking at your school’s acceptances is misleading because Case did not accept (mostly wait listed) many high stat applicants because (my opinion) they assumed it was a safety school for these people…and probably this was accurate in many instances. Stay positive, apply early action and show interest! Good luck!

I agree with others that you definitely /can/ get in. I would say your best shot is to write a really good essay (it helps for other common app schools too!) and don’t say your intended major is computer science (you don’t really seem to show any interested in computer science in your ECs). Also make sure to send case updates (e.g. after you get your EA decision if you get waitlisted) and show as much interest as possible!

I am a freshman computer science major at cwru who had about the same gpa as you with SATs of cr640 m800 w650 sat2 math 800 phys 670, my essays were very good however and I wrote about CS even though I didn’t do any ECs in the field but my essay was about research I have investigated in CD and how we can apply it to the real world. I applyed EA also. I got in with a 17500 scholarship so don’t be too worried

Thank you so much! Yes I will keep you all posted.

Wow this is useful! Thanks for the information. Are you liking computer science at cwru? And are you pursuing a BS or BA in cs?
