Hi! I am currently an 11th grader in CA, and UT is my dream school. Im ranked number 2 in my class of 500. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and scored a 1900 on my SAT when i took it a couple of weeks ago, but i plan on taking it again, and getting no less than a 2000. I took all AP/HP classes throughout high school, and am involved in several different I plan on applying Pre-Law. Im really worried about not being accepted because of Texas's Top 8% Law! Please let me know what you think!

@Courtneyyyyy I don’t understand why you are worried? If you are ranked #2 in your class than you are obviously in the Top 8% and will therefore be an auto-admit to UT Austin. The only thing you will have to worry about is competing to see if you will get in your major. And besides that, what you have so far about your extracurriculars is more than enough to make you a competitive applicant for UT. I’m not sure how competitive getting into UT is from out of state, but just keep doing what you are doing and I’m sure you’ll be fine.(:

@college38283: the OP said that she is from California. Therefore, regardless of her rank, she is not an auto admit at the University of Texas. UT only takes about 10% of its students from out of state. It is extremely difficult to get admitted as an out of state student. @Courtneyyyyy: your chances are good, but its still going to be a challenge to get accepted.
You both might want to spend some time over on the UT forum instead of the general Texas forum.

Can you express why UT is your dream school? It is not very different than UCLA, where you are more likely to get admitted and which would be much cheaper than OOS at UT. Have you considered Arizona State? It is very similar to UT and might give you merit money, which UT almost certainly (I’d say definitely) will not.

@wordword I grew up in Texas, and moved to California a couple of years before high school and really want to return. I have looked at Arizona, but I’m not fond of their location, and I want to leave Southern California! :)

I’m in pretty much the same situation but I have higher test scores and lower class rank/GPA. Luckily my school doesn’t report class rank but given how fondly UT looks at it you probably have a strong chance! Business or engineering schools may be another monster though
