WELL. My ACT score is not that great, I really have to bump up the reading. I am going to retake in october, hopefully to bring the composite up to a 32.

I have to take the SAT 2, probably have only one chance at that..maybe 2. Also I am going to retake SAT Chem and Bio...bump those up to 750+, 780+ respectively.

I have a plan on applying EA to Stanford (and probably EA at GaTech too..it's public so I can do this right?), and also applying earlier (not EA, ED, etc; just before the deadlines) to OSU and MSU because they have a rolling admission. I will probably get in, but I am really interested in their honors colleges/scholarships/FA which is why I would do so. I feel like I probably won't get into stanford, but I want to try anyway.

So I was thinking of applying ED 2 to HMC but I have some problems:
1. Let's say I got in...it's really expensive :(((
2. I am interested in majoring in biology, but I don't know if HMC is a good place to go for it.
3. If I did bio, I might have to do premed...which I don't really want to do in 1st place.
4. It's really hard to graduate from their w/ a GPA good enough to get into a decent grad school.

I do like Comp. Sci., but I have never been given the opportunity to learn it....I would LOVE to learn it though. I don't know if being a girl helps my chances at all...but if it does, should I apply ED 2 or RD? Would my chances change much??? It seems that girls applying to HMC have a higher acceptance chance..is it only for prospect. CS majors? or all? I would probably put undecided because I really don't know yet..

Help?!

also, when applying to HMC, do they require ALL ACT scores? in case I'm still heavily interested, I would rather send my October ACT scores to them free, instead of paying

Close to no chance at Harvey mudd, class rank is far too low. As for Stanford I do not think it is worth it to apply SCEA there. Chances there are even worse than at HMC.

im still in the top 10%…

Take the ACT in September. After that you can make decision regarding EA and ED.

ugh…i feel like cortana is right…my rank is hideous.

bummppppppppppppppp

Almost no chance at HMC. Your scores are far too low and you don’t have straight As in your STEM classes. Plus you don’t really have any good STEM ECs. Also, you’re taking Calc AB after getting an acceptable grade in PreCalc. This looks like you’re not trying to challenge yourself.

I disagree with cortana431 though in that you do have a better shot at Stanford than HMC. For Stanford a lot will depend on your essays and ability to come across as well rounded. Still you have a very low chance and Stanford is a very high reach.

29 ACT is too low for stanford unless you are an athlete

how about if my ACT was raised to a 31-32?

and how is taking Calc AB look like I’m not trying to challenge myself?? My school doesn’t offer BC.

I’m not trying to make excuses…but my area and school offer barely any STEM ECs…I was lucky enough that a Science Olympiad team was founded…

@quintamonious
Perhaps, but PianoGal’s class rank is far from placing her under serious consideration in admission to Stanford. In this case, Stanford and HMC are probably in the same ballpark in terms of reach.

And successful applicants to schools like Stanford typically score a 34+ on the ACT (excluding hooked applicants).

I know a girl (she was Native American though) who was admitted to Stanford with a low 2000 SAT, so it does happen. Also, being female may give you a slight bump from HMC. Also, you might look into Scripps or Pitzer and see if you can get a techy degree from one of those schools and take courses at Harvey Mudd.

so I probably shouldn’t expect to get in EA for Stanford, or ED2 for HMC…I know I won’t get into stanford…i’m just having one of those ‘hopeful, it’s worth a shot’ feelings…

@PAGRok- being Native American is a hook. Therefore getting in with lower stats doesn’t really mean anything in relation to the OP who isn’t hooked.

I didn’t know she wasn’t hooked nor do I know her ethnicity. I always believed the term “hooked” meant something other than URM status. And it should mean something, that students are admitted with lower stats. The OP may have a very small chance, but she still has a chance.

Hooked doesn’t always mean URM. URM is a subcategory of being hooked. Hooks include URM, athletes, first generation, etc.

Students admitted with lower stats are usually those with a hook or some sort of outstanding quality on their resume. If you compare yourself to those admitted with lower stats, then you will be setting yourself up for disappointment.

Problem is I don’t have a hook…I’m white/persian…parents both went to college…so I guess it’s up to my essays. both of my patents are immigrants from Iran, so I might be able to incorporate that into a good essay. I just got back from a trip to iran too. Otherwise, I probably have a very slim chance of getting in.
