@Studious99 We dont have class rank and a good amount of kids got into cornell last year, but most had higher averages like an 100 W. however, i dont think their extracurriculars were as competetive. We also had 3 accepted t havard the year before. and a few to Upenn
Don’t worry about whether a school is an “Ivy” or not. You should apply to a range of reach, match, and safety schools that you can afford. Will your parents be paying full price, or will you be needing financial aid? What do you want to major in? Are you an under-represented minority? First generation college? There are a lot of factors to look at.
My mom is a single mom, making around 40,000 a year i believe. Im white, I have other schools on my list as well but these are dream schools for me, thats why i just wanted to know. My dad has an assoiates degree but my mom didnt go to college in the U.s. I think for my financil standing i may be offered a good amount of aid.
What is your dad’s income? Ivies and other highly competitive schools that give a lot of financial aid require you to submit the Fafsa AND . a form called the CSS. The CSS requires you to submit income information for both of your parents, even if only one of them has custody of you.
OK, so the first thing you need to do is to run the Net Price Calculators for EACH school you are interested in. It will give you a ballpark estimate of how much aid you will get. Every college in the U.S. has a NPC. Just google the name of the school with NPC. Here’s the one for Amherst College, just so you see what it’s like. https://www.amherst.edu/offices/financialaid/calculator/myintuition
This is what you need to be doing now – running the NPCs of a whole bunch of colleges. Also you need to be looking at a bunch of colleges that give MERIT aid. Ivies do not.
Do not rely on your guidance counselor for financial aid information. Truly, they have NO idea. It does not matter that your dad WON’T pay. The college does not care. Colleges do not give financial aid based on whether parents want to pay or not. His income and assets will be included in your financial aid calculation. If you do not submit his information you will not be considered for financial aid. If he absolutely will not submit his financial info, then you cannot look at colleges that require the CSS. Google “colleges that require CSS” and you will see the list. All the Ivies are on it.
This should not be your biggest concern right now. Applying to colleges that you can AFFORD should be your #1 concern.
I will say this: You are not out of range for highly selective colleges. However, you will not get financial aid at those colleges unless your dad fills out the CSS. As long as your parents have “average” assets for their income level, you will likely get good aid, but your dad still has to fill out the form.
What you need to be working on now is talking to your parents about the financial forms they will have to fill out: Fafsa and CSS.
