Do I have a chance at merit scholarships?

Hi!

I'm just curious if my stats make me a candidate for fordham merit-based scholarships.

SAT: 1940 - 700CR 630M 610W
SAT II: 800World History 750Literature 740Biology
GPA:3.7 (3.83 in mid-year school report)
Southeast Asian decent
From a Jesuit School.

Other schools have given me merit scholarships like Loyola New Orleans(18500), Gonzaga(16000), Loyola Marymount(9000) and University of San Francisco(5000). Will Fordham, based on my stats, give me scholarships close to these amounts? It's one of my top choices but I'm now having a hard time deciding. I was accepted early action by the way and if this info helps, I filed my FAFSA on Jan. 13 but I am still in the process of making corrections (most notably the Parents signature page).

thanks!

Its typically the 1400 mark that makes you eligible for decent aid but it is always circumstantial. I had similar stats (1360/1960 sat score) and wasn’t all that impressed with my aid package for what its worth.

i got a 1400/2100 on the SATs and fordham gave me something that they called “gift aid.” i was also accepted EA and this package came within about two weeks of finalizing my FAFSA things. The package i was awarded was much better than i expected, covering my entire EFC. i’m not sure if this qualifies as a scholarship or merit aid or what but your scores seem pretty good too so you should be getting a fairly generous package as well

thanks for answering!

If your SATs are 1400 or better that just increases your chances for good merit aid, it by no means is a cutoff meaning that your 1330 won’t get you anything. If it doesn’t work out, at least you have some good choices.

Sorry to hear that you weren’t happy with your FA package but most schools do not come through with the $ for transfers.

Congrats on your offer! I read on your other thread that you are strongly considering Fordham over NYU. My S had the same choice last year and he has no regrets. I suggest that you speak to a FA counselor…in person, if possible…to find out if and how this package can change from year to year. You want to be sure that you know the answer to that question so you don’t end attending what you think will be an affordable school as a Freshman that later becomes unaffordable as a Soph, Jr or Sr.

My S got admitted just last week under RD. He has very good stat’s but they did not say anything about aid other than it might come later in March. What do you think his chances are? ACT 35 - Grades - 4.0 UW 4.4 W, lots of leadership.

SDmom2 - Based on his stats, leadership activities, and the fact he was accepted early (most RD applicants hear in April) I’d expect your son will get a very good merit aid package…but nothing is guaranteed until that letter comes! Congratulations on his acceptance and all the best.

thanks sandkmom! from what i understood from the letter, my package is fixed for four years unless there is a drastic change in my family’s finances. they specifically mentioned contacting them if i am awarded additional scholarship money. but the best thing to do probably is to talk to someone in person just to be sure, thanks for the advice

Don’t get me wrong I’m still attending in the fall I just wouldn’t mind if they had sent a little more money my way… That is the price you pay for not making the right choice the first time around though.

@FromCal - with your stats I would estimate a merit scholarship somewhere between USF and LMU. My guesstimate would be $7000.

thanks to all of you! Btw, when will we know of merit scholarship decisions for early action accepted applicants??

My son was admitted EA and just got a letter that gave him $15K merit money (they tagged on the $5500 Stafford loan along with it perhaps to obfuscate the real amount) broken down by 2 names scholarships by semester. His stats were 33 ACT and 3.8 UW GPA.

Wen they offer you merit money, is it all 4 years? My S got a deans scholarship to USC and it was for 8 semesters (3.0 gpa maintained). Does Fordham do the same?

SDmom2 - My daughter initially rec’d ltr stating Dean’s Scholarship $10K for each year of undergraduate study with her acceptance ltr in December. Early this month we got another letter offering her $27K in “gift aid” annually for up to four years of undergraduate study (which includes the Dean’s Scholarship). All aid is renewable w/satisfactory academic progress, a minimum 2.0 (surprised at low GPA??) cumulative grade point average, annual filing of FAFSA, etc.

Note: Each package is different and some scholarships require different gpa’s. Our ltr did not note what GPA she needs to maintain to keep the Dean’s Scholarship. The latest ltr only referenced the “gift aid”. Confusing because this gift aid includes the scholarship. We will have to ask when we visit in March.

^^^3.0 miminum GPA for Dean’s and several other scholarships.

As long as we’re discussing Fordham and aid, can you guys let me know if I’ll qualify… I need a decent amount for me to go because I cant afford it all.
