Do I have a chance, at PLME?

I am considering Brown University for Early Decision, more especially PLME.
I’m an Asian American Female attending one of the top public high schools in Georgia.

I’m currently Top 10 in my class of about 530 students.
SAT: First try was not very good (2080). I’m taking it next week.
SATII: 780 Math IIC, 740 Biology, taking Chem and possibly US History as well in the fall.
ACT: 32 (35 English, 34 Math, 26 Reading ARGH, 32 Science) which I am retaking as well.
AP Classes (including senior year): World History, Calculus BC, Biology, Language, Literature, Chem, Physics B, Statistics

This is my leadership throughout high school:
9th Grade: Secretary of the Junior Varsity Math Team
10th Grade: Secretary of the Varsity Math Team, Student Council Representative
11th Grade: Vice President of the Varsity Math Team, Student Council Treasurer, Science Olympiad Vice President
12th Grade: President of the Varsity Math Team, Student Council President, Science Olympiad Pres/Vice Pres (we didn’t have elections yet), National Honor Society Treasurer

I am a fencer. I was High School State Champion and State Runner Up in Women’s Fencing for two years. I was a Junior Olympics Qualifier, and I rank 6th in the state in the Georgia State Games in 2006.

For music, I was the Associate Concert Master at the All County Orchestra. I have been an All State violinist for consecutive years. I have received a professional music diploma from the Royal Schools of Music in England.

I ranked top 4 in Regional and State Science Olympiad, particularly in entomology which I love, strange but true. Also, I have receieved top awards at Spanish composition contests and have ranked state and nationally for the National Spanish Exam.

Recognition I have received so far are: Monte Jade award, Discover Card Tribute Award Semifinalist, Wellesley College Book Award Winner, UGA Certificate of Merit, National American Miss Finalist

I volunteer at the #2 Children’s Hospital in the country. I was the captain of the volunteer program in 2006 summer. I have volunteered since 9th Grade and have 100+ hours. I also volunteer at my local nature center.

I’m possibly interning at a top breast cancer center in the Atlanta area over the summer.

Do I have a chance, especially if I bring up my standardized test scores?
Also, do I need more science-oriented activities?

bump... please someone reply

I'm not one to properly judge people in any way, but you don't seem to be focused in on any one thing. I can see that all of the things you do take a lot of time and energy, but it doesn't really seem to be focused in on anything in particular. Just a thought. Again, I'm a junior in high school, so you can't take what I say too seriously.

PLME is insanely competitive. You have suitable ECs, but your numbers are a little lacking. You should be hoping for 2200+ SATs.

Your ACT score should be fine if you bump up that reading score. What happened with that? Your english score is great so it's odd that the reading score is so low.

Great EC's but you need to show that you are absolutely dedicated to becoming a doctor. A lot could depend on your essays.

thanks for the feedback cc-ers :)

on the act i didn't get to the last passage, and with like a minute left i started to blindly guess.

Yeah, like others have said, you should bump up your SAT and ACT scores...the discrepancy between the ACT english and reading is a little strange, though.

"I have received a professional music diploma from the Royal Schools of Music in England." Whoa. Could you explain how you got this? I'm not doubting you, but I'm curious and this could be good for your activities statement.

And volunteering is a plus, the Science Olympiad and fencing especially is sweet...I think the breast cancer center interning would be a great opportunity, especially because you didn't list any research experience. Any way to show that you can do the humanitarian work AND hardcore science is good.

I know an asian girl with a 2300, valedictorian at a very competitive school, and major research that didn't get into PLME this year (but did get into Brown), and another girl with similar stats that did get in.

"Discover Card Tribute Award - Semifinalist?" Is this also one of recognitions on the list? I believe you have a good chance with new SAT reading/math score (>1520).

sooo. i don't think i did so hot on the sat's today.
the ed deadline is nov 1. do yall think the admissions would accept scores if i retake the sat in october and possibly do more subject tests in november?

taking the SAT in October will get your scores back just in time for early decision applications to Brown. scores will be up on the 25th, according to the college board. I don't know Brown's policy on accepting late SAT IIs, but if you took those in November, you wouldn't get scores back until the 20th—that may be a stretch.

thanks daveb.
is there anyone who got into plme with just bio as the only science subject test? i think i might need to retake bio (i don't think 740 is good enough to get in) and to take chem. i worry.

I don't know that you'll get into PLME, but you'd definitely get into Brown for anything else...I mean, granted that you decide to fence for the school.

Anyway, your extra-curriculars are really amazing. I know a girl who was 5th (I think) in NJ for foil who didn't do as much stuff as you do who got into Brown.

If anything, you could always go for something like biology and just apply to, like, Harvard or Yale or Columbia for med school.

that may even end up being a good thing. what if you get to plme, take some classes that sound interesting to you, and realize you don't want a medical career? then you'd be kind of stuck without a paddle.

soo... let's say that i get a 2200ish sat, and then my act is 35-36.
i'm not sure how much brown looks at the act over sat, but do you all think that together these scores will seem good enough? my question seems pretty stupid, but i'm really freaking out about these standardized tests.

how do u know they look at act over sat? i heard that northeast schools prefer the SAT?

no, you misinterpreted what she meant. she's saying, in terms of how much they factor SAT scores, she doesn't know how the ACT is factored in or compared.

from my research, every question about the ACT gets the response that both are considered equally. this is the case with most other colleges, as well.

update: i got a 33 on the act (35 english, 36 math, 32 reading, 27 science EWWWWWW). i barely finished the reading, and then i didn't finish the science, sigh. i got a 2240 on the sats (690 cr, 780 math, 770 writing). i plan to retake both of them in the fall.

also, i'm not applying to brown ed anylonger, but brown regular decision for plme. what are my chances now?

bumping and update: i'm adding on to my ec's

national american miss georgia pageant
1. academic achievement winner
2. talent 4th runner up (i messed up so bad but somehow still got top 5, lol)
3. most recommendations winner
4. state finalist award
5. national american miss and all-merican miss pageant qualifier

chance me more, por favor!

NO ONE KNOWS.

Seriously... especially for PLME which is the hardest program in the country to get into (50-60 kids out of thousands who apply).

Try, see what happens. No number of HS students pretending they have the inside scoop (they don't, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning-Kruger_Syndrome) will give you any insight. Do as well as you can, work hard to make sure who you are as a person comes through, and roll the dice.
