Do I have a chance @ making NYU?

I'm currently a junior in a very competitive high school. I have a 3.9 GPA (weighted), about 3.5 (unweighted) - and this places me in the top quarter of my graduating class. Since I can remember, NYU has always been the school which has most interested me - and I would love to go! I'm not exactly sure if I have a chance at making it, though. As far as my SAT scores go, I got a 1980 (CR: 710, M: 600, WR: 670) and I'm retaking it. I expect each score to go up about 20-30 points since I'm reviewing more heavily so that would put me in the 2040-2060 score range. My extracurriculars are one of my stronger attributes (numerous clubs including International Amnesty, Cancer Awareness, Film Club, Lecture Society, Orchestra, National Honor Society, National French Honor Society, North Texas Youth Honor Society, Gay-Lesbian Alliance, Debate etc.) with some leadership experience in a couple of those groups and some job experience as well. My essay is what I'm least worried about because I consider myself a very good writer, and I know that the essay is important for NYU, I just don't know if its enough to make up for my low GPA.

Most of my schedule consists of AP/honors classes (I will have taken 13 AP course by the time I graduate) with A's and B's in all of them so far.

I've heard NYU takes diversity into account. Does it help at all that I'm Middle Eastern and a gay male? I've joined local organizations to represent those aspects of myself.

Also, my cousin is an NYU employee. Does that count as alumni, does it help at all?

Basically, I'm applying to Steinhardt for Media/Communications. I've heard its not as competitive as the other schools, but its still selective.

I think that what I lack in terms of my grades/rank, I can make up in my essay or other means because I consider myself unique and distinctive, and I've heard that NYU selects students who are creative and add something special to the student body - not solely basing their decision on academics. Does anyone have some insight or help, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you can pull up your unweighted GPA to at least a 3.6-3.7 I think you have a much higher chance. Right now I’d say it’s about 50-50. NYU is weird with admissions though, I know people with lower stats who have gotten in and people with higher stats who’ve gotten rejected (as with a lot of other schools).

I wonder why my thread was posted twice :</p>

Unfortunately, theres not much more I can do for my GPA D: is there anything else you recommend which would help my chances?

Not really. You have really good ECs and with an anticipated SAT in the 2000+ score range there’s not much else that you can do. You’re definitely qualified though.

I recommend that you volunteer outside of your school a little bit more or look into some summer programs – just as a way to bolster your already impressive resume.

As long as you raise your SAT scores and keep your GPA up, I don’t see why you don’t have a chance!

Good luck.

Yes, actually - forgot to add! I’m attending the Northeastern Summer College program for HS students.
