I am a high school sophomore this year and have just started looking at colleges. Target major right now is Biomedical Engineering but I’m not dead set yet. I go to a very rigorous high school in a very competitive district and many from my district have been accepted into the ivies before. My district goes on a weighted 5.0 GPA scale where AP and PreAP classes count as 5.0 credits and normal academic classes plus electives count as 4.0 credits. I currently have a 4.35 weighted GPA and 3.92 unweighted GPA. My SAT is a 1510 and ACT is 33, but I’m going to retake these again this summer as well as take some SAT subject tests. I am very active in fine arts extracurricular activities as well. I’m an officer (uniform chair) of my school’s Choir department, I’m in the varsity top-level choir at my school plus my school’s show choir and by the time I graduate I will be a 7 year choir member (this is an award in my school district). I am also a member of MNHS (music national honor society), and I made Texas All State Mixed Choir as 1st chair Soprano 1 (1st in state basically) this year and have participated twice in the UIL solo and ensemble contest: my freshman year earning a superior rating on a class 2 solo and this year a superior rating on a class 1 solo (so this year I advance to state). I am active in my school’s theater department and have been in several shows both in my school’s company and outside of school through community theater. I am also a member of my high school’s Thespian Troupe (troupe 7014, and this is basically national honor society for theater). I am also a member of my high school’s chapter of NHS. I’ve also dabbled in my school’s Science Olympiad team some. Does this point towards strong candidacy?
You are on the right the track. You may want something you to do to speak more towards your intended major but your stats are good for now. Be sure to have a good mix of match and safety schools.
@momofsenior1
Thank you I intend on applying to other ivies as well, but UT Austin and Texas A&M for match schools, and Baylor University and UH for safety. I usually compete in Dynamic Planet and Astronomy for Science Olympiad and have done fairly well in each event.
Do some research on schools that rank between Cornell and UT Austin as well, you’ll find a lot of good schools.
Your stats are good but your EC are toward arts. You would like to major in biomedical engineering or any kind of engineering,wouldn’t you want to show your interest and commitment toward that direction?
My D’s friend is in BME at Cornell now. All I can say is that he is exceptionally bright.
@rphcfb
I am doing summer programs this year for engineering, and while I cannot chose what events I compete in for Science Olympiad, I normally compete in Dynamic Planet and Astronomy and do exceptionally well, although one year my coach assigned me to Wright Stuff which is, although not biomedical, an engineering of the sort.
Any chance you’d like to stay in the arts?
