Hey guys I know this is probably one of the more-annoying types of threads but I could really use some outside perspective. It's always been my dream to get into UNC, but as an out of state kid from Connecticut, I realize that it is a huge longshot. I'm just wondering where you think I might stand in terms of acceptance... I applied EA and was deferred, so they didn't like what they saw too much, but at the same time they weren't too unimpressed, I guess.

4.1 weighted GPA
2130 SAT, (800 math, 700 writing, 630 reading)
I play varsity baseball, and play in league teams for it all year round
NHS member
I've done a decent amount of community service
720 math II SAT II, 710 us history SAT II
4 on AP stat and ap us history exams
since I was deferred I've heard that midyear grades are pretty important, mine were:
AP English Literature: A-
AP Calculus AB: A
AP Physics: B
Accounting I: A+
Humanities: A

I know how hard it would be to get in, but it would really be a dream come true. The good thing is that I'm not 100% dependent on getting accepted in terms of getting a quality education, I've already been accepted into the Honors Program at Tulane with a $24,000 a year scholarship, so at least that pressure is off.

I also am an OOS applicant to UNC, I also applied Early, and was accepted Early with similar spec as you, with slightly higher GPA and slightly lower SAT. Does this answer your question?

I think you have a good shot. take the SAT's again. it may be a little late for them to make a decision by march 20, but if you get waitlisted it would definately help. You were definately right when you said that semester grades count alot when you are deferred.

i think you still have a shot. You have solid stats, so i mean it will come down to a matter of chance. You have solid grades. Anecdote tho, I know someone who was waitlisted at UNC and got in in August so you never know. Just keep being optimistic.

My friend got the same 24,000 a year scholarship to Tulane also, and got admitted early to UNC with farrrr lower stats than you...but then again he is in state..but i think you will be fine.

the apps are already being reviewed and they said that the Jan sat is the last one to count. I would wait and see the outcome on March 20 and if waitlisted, take again then. Gives you a few weeks to brush up and try to do better. You will probably get in. What is funny is this, they must have had a lot of apps with similar sats cause you are like the 4th person that I know that was around those scores, gpa and got deferred.

hey guys... i realize since this is mostly oos kids theres probly not too much inside perspective... anyways i know im sounding like a broken record but how exactly do they choose to defer kids? i know its extremely tough, but i feel im a pretty competitive candidate... like a lot of you ive been accepted to really selective schools and gotten money from them so i was a little taken aback when i got deferred from unc

sorry this is so long! im just frustrated knowing that everything i do is because im passionate about it, not just cuz it'll look good on an application, but that doesnt seem to always be enough...

does anyone else ever wonder this: if two admissions counselors read you application and don't like it enough to admit you, wonder what two other ones would think or decide? Sometimes it seems like it is just the luck of the draw. I am sure the admissions office is as balanced as they can be but this is like getting a job, if the manager that likes you is there that day you get it, if the other one that doesnt or looks for other things, sorry. almost wish we could apply two different times to a school and see if it changes the outcome! I know, this is just the way it is.
