Do I have a chance? I think it's a bit competitive for in-state applicants :/

Yes and a very good one.

Haha I’m really surprised… I thought the average gpa was 3.6 at UMass Amherst?

That is correct. It is the average. Your 3.38 offsets a 3.82. Your SATs on the other hand are above average. Also, something like 2/3 of applicants are accepted.

Thank you so much for replying!

Also is it better if I apply early or regular decision? UMass Amherst isn’t my top choice.

If it isn’t your top choice, then there is no need to apply early.

I would give UMA a shot EA, which might de-stress your winter application session once you get in somewhere. Since your stats set you above the basic standards at UMA, you should be able to get in with relative ease.

<<<------MA kid applying EA for similar reasons

Yeah I agree. Plus I think that applying for cs might be a tad bit difficult since it’s a popular major. I guess I’ll apply EA. I’m actually applying early for most of my schools.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I feel more comfortable and less stressed.

CS is one of the more competitive majors, but I think you have a good chance. At the very least you will get admitted as undeclared.

What is your M+CR?

EA gives you the best chance for any merit aid, so you might as well apply early. Although I don’t know if your stats are high enough, it doesn’t hurt to maximize your chances.

My M+CR is 1400/1600.

I’m not applying for merit aid. Instate tuition is already a pretty great deal.

aznrobot9—

Instate tuition is only $1714 per year—but the fees with add up to several thousand dollars. You may want some merit aid to offset those costs. Total instate cost (tuition, fees room and board) add up to about 20K because of the fees.

1400 will get you admitted to UMass for sure, and with your strength of classes, I think you have an excellent chance at being admitted to CS.

You don’t have to separately apply for merit aid; but history has shown that EA applicants get more than RD applicants.

UMass tuition+fees is over $13K/year, which I would not characterize as that much of a “great deal”. As a female interested in CS you can probably beat this at many other schools, so I hope you are casting a wide net in your applications.

Total cost for 2013/2014 including room and board is $23,647, and by the time you add in all the extra fees not included in that, you will likely cross $24,000.

Paying for college is my family’s concern, not college confidential’s. I like your advice and feedback everyone, but I’ve mainly posted this thread to talk about my chances of getting in.

aznrobot9–chill out!! Glad to hear your family is “rolling in the dough”–I hope your family feels the same way.

(message brought to you by a parent who pays bills)

That was really uncalled for. MADad, maybe you should chill out. :/
