Okay so I am a Senior this year and i really want to apply to these schools. I am an out of state i live in NY and I African American. My gpa is roughly 3.39 but im not sure it is somewhere around 88 to 90. I initially took the ACT and SAT with virtually no studying. I got a 22 on the ACT and a 1480 (all 3) on the SAT. I have decided to retake just the ACT in December as i think i can easily bump that score up! I am also a very involved student! I am in the National Honor Society, Vice President of Student Council, School and community theatre. And a bunch of other stuff i dont feel like naming. And lastly I would like to double major in Drama/Theatre Arts and English Education! So what are my chances of getting into any of these schools!? Or are there any other school in California around LA that you would reccomend?

Can you afford the out-of-state prices (about $30,000-35,000 per year for CSU, about $50,000-55,000 per year for UC)?

To check whether you have a possibility of getting into a UC or CSU, do the following:

Make sure that you have taken the needed courses: http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/csu-uc-a-gcomparisonmatrix.pdf

Calculate your GPA as described here:
[CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - GPA Calculator/url

For CSU, check your eligibility here: [url=<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU]CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - Eligibility Index - Nonresidents Residents](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

Many CSUs are campus impacted and have higher standards than minimum CSU eligibility: [CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - Campuses That Have Higher Standards](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

Many majors at CSUs are impacted and have even higher standards: [Impaction | Student Academic Support | CSU](http://www.calstate.edu/sas/impactioninfo.shtml) . Fullerton and Long Beach are impacted for English and Theater (actually all majors at those campuses).

CSU impaction information by campus: [CSU Campus Impaction Information | Student Academic Support | CSU](http://www.calstate.edu/sas/impaction-campus-info.shtml)

For UC, you need a minimum GPA of 3.4. But note that UCLA and UC Irvine are much more selective than that: [University of California - Freshman admission profiles](http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/profiles/index.html)

Note that most CSUs have heavily commuter student populations. Additional CSUs in the Los Angeles area include Pomona and Dominguez Hills.

Calif publics on your list don’t give their aid to OOS students. Calif aid is largely Cal Grants, and as a non-resident, you wouldn’t qualify for that aid.

Unless your parents are willing to pay the full high OOS cost, you need to find affordable choices.

The UCs and CSUs expect higher GPAs for OOS students.

Strictly speaking, this is not true, but the non-loan aid offered to non-California residents is unlikely to come close to meeting need, unlike for California residents. In particular, the non-resident surcharge ($11,160 per year (30 semester units at $372 per unit) at CSU and $22,878 for UC) will not be covered by financial aid.

The CSU net price calculator is here: [CSUMentor - Financial Aid - PAIS](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

The net price calculators for the UCs are on the individual campuses’ web sites.
