Do i have a chance whatsoever?!

I hate these kind of threads but I just have to know because after reading others, I’m feeling like i really have no chance; AT ALL…

I really like Barnard College & I mentioned that in my application but my chances are even slimmer because the competition is crazy!

I participate in a myriad of extracurricular activities such as National Honor Society, Science League, College Bowl, Mock Trial Program, Yearbook Committee, Rachel’s Challenge, Newspaper Club as well as Volleyball for two years, Soccer for two years, and Track for 3 years.

I am a La Verdad substance abuse prevention peer leader, a part of my city’s Youth City Council, Northeast Tobacco Youth Advisory Board, part of the 84 Statewide Tobacco Crew, Anti-Violence Club at North Shore Community College, Reach out and Read volunteer at the local Community Health Center, NHS tutor at my school, Girls Incorporated Tutor, Fourth Grade Sunday School Teacher for two years, Walk for Hunger 2008 organizer, Liver Foundation Walk, and an Obama campaign volunteer this year, as well as many other volunteer opportunities during my high school career.

I recently wrote a grant for Girls incorporated and we were awarded it accordingly $10, 000 to fund a role model’s tobacco group which I am leading. I was also given an award for being the National Finalist for Excellence in Youth Advocacy Award and given a citation by the mayor of my city…I am planning on sending as a supplement material to my application a copy of this award and citation.

p.s. I promised myself I wouldn’t ask questions like these…but I had to know what anybody else thought…

also, my CRITICAL READING was 510, MATH was 590, and my WRITING was 550; this was after taking the SAT three times

my SAT Subject test for MATH 1 was 650 & MATH 2 was 700

I’m taking 3 AP Classess this year & I took 2 last year; scored a 4 on both (AP English language & AP HISTORY). Hoping for a five on AP Biology; my gpa is 4.5 UW ( out of 5.0) and 3.7 out of 4.0. & I am an African American female from New England

Thanks for reading this and any answer would numb down my worries!

Your extracurriculars are very impressive and diverse. I am sure you presented a focused and well-thought-out application that will highlight why Barnard would benefit from your presence and why it's the best school for you. You may not have the most amazing "stats" in the world, but Barnard does do a great job at looking at the whole student.

Where else did you apply? What do you hope to study while at Barnard?

Oh, and as my name would imply, I am a "mom" and no better qualified than anyone else to assess your "chances" for admission, but IMO, you seem to have had a great HS career and I am sure you will be somewhere wonderful for college so you can continue in your amazingness!

Thank you! And im applying as a biology and premed major. im also applying to BC, amherst college, UMASS Amherst, Bryn Mawr College, Spelman College, BU, Northeastern, and Holy cross. I wasnt planning on applying to so many schools but because of my parents financial situation i received fee waivers for all of them. But thank you again, so im assuming your daughter is there, what is she studying?

My daughter is a senior and her major is neuroscience. She chose Barnard originally because she wanted strong dance and strong academics and that is not all that easy to find. She also originally thought she would be some sort of English major but fell in love very quickly with neuroscience and has turned into quite the science nerd!

She is currently waiting to hear back from grad programs, so the process begins again!

and, superwoman, you have a great future ahead of you...your EC's tell me that you are a very motivated individual! I can't wait to hear all about your acceptances in March!

churchmusicmom- Good luck to your daughter! and Thank you, I can't wait to hear back from all my school's either! It's such a long wait!

i feel like u have a great chance w ur extra curriculars and GPA... u sats are a bit low, but barnard looks more at grades!

Laxgurl0707- Thanks! I was starting to feel like a lost case (lol) but thank you again for telling me your opinion!

Thanks, super. I think she has a good chance to get in to her top choice thanks to the great start Barnard has given her. You ladies have a lot of wonderful opportunities ahead of you, regardless of where you end up in school!!

don't doubt yourself! my college counselor told me not to even apply to barnard and i got in ED. we are sorta opposites, my scores were high but my gpa was low and like you, my ECs were really good and my teacher recs were really good. i have very original ECs and essays and i played up how i'm not the barnard stereotype which i think helped. barnard can DEFINITELY see past numbers. good luck!!!

celloshreder- thanks! I definetly noted the love I have for the school, so hopefully I get in! Good luck in your endeavors, & I hope I'll be going to Barnard along with you! : )

hey you are applying to Barnard too...you have very strong ECAs, if you have a good why Barnard essay have a good shot I think...

Astrophoenix--thanks!! Yea, I slaved over those essays lol. Good luck to you too if you're applying!
