Is Brown worth my application? Do I have a half decent shot at getting in? My extracurriculars are impressive (president and founder of chem club, vice president student governement, treasurer of Students Against Destructive Decisions, Cross Country team captain since sophomore year, and a lot of other involvement throughout) I have a 4.0 gpa with a rigorous course load, especially in math and some science. I am valedictorian of my class but heres the killer… I currently have a 1960 sat (720 math, 640 reading, 600 writing) and 29 ACT, Im hoping to get both of those up a bit but obviously cant get a 2100 or anything. Thanks for your opinion!

It obviously would be good to raise those test scores since they are weak for Brown. If Brown is your dream school, you should apply. Val is a great accomplishment - you should be very proud of your grades.
However, if you were my kid, I would encourage you to apply ED to Bowdoin. Great school, test optional. You would have a much better shot of getting into a great school that way.

Like Carla said I would raise the SAT to at least 2,000. Bowdoin is also test optional like Carla said. If we are going to throw in a few LACs I would also encourage you to apply to Bates (Also test optional.). And please don’t say we are saying that because your SAT score isn’t up to par (Its a great score but for Ivies its a bit of a stretch) but because we think those are great schools that can compare to Brown that are test optional. Also the CEO of netflix cam from Bowdoin. RFK went to Bates briefly as well. If Brown is a priority raise the SAT scores. If you can’t raise it then turn in the ACT score instead.

Yeah I understand that my sat’s aren’t up to par for an ivy and I appreciate the test optional school recommendations. If you have any other well respected schools with engineering and schools that are a little more affordable I would appreciate more recommendations!

There are a ton of schools with good/great engineering. You don’t have to go to an Ivy to be very successful with that. Why don’t you go to the College Search forum, there have been recent posts about engineering schools or you can make your own so you will get suggestions for your stats. (Maybe GA Tech, tuition cost is attractive too)

If you are considering retaking the SAT to give you that boost, check the SAT-preparation forum for the pinned threads that layout some systematic prep systems:

If you got your M+CR just up a bit you’d qualify for some of the automatic full tuition or full ride schools pinned in the Financial Aid forum. Some of those would be good for engineering.

I would not assume that you can not score a 2100 by retaking the SAT. My daughter scored 1960 as well the first time she took it. She then studied the questions/answers that she got wrong or failed to answer during that first test… and when she retook the SAT, she scored a 2120. So remain confident, take it again and good luck…

And she has already applied to Brown as well.
