Do I have a chance?

I would really like to go to UT Austin or SMU I'm hoping I will have a 3.5 GPA at 30 hours. I would need a scholarship for SMU... Should I keep hoping or try and set my mind on an easier school?

You didn’t really provide much info. What are your SAT Scores? ECs? Unweighted GPA? APs?

Also, major are you looking at?

Im a transfer student. Will my high school grades still matter? And I didn’t do well on the SAT and didn’t take the ACT, I was told I didn’t need those if I had 30 or more hours

This is taken from the SMU website :
Students with a 3.5 transferable GPA and at least 50 transferable credit hours transferring from a 2-or 4- year college are eligible for $1,500 per term for up to five terms. Fall- and spring-term entrants are eligible, and the scholarship is renewable if full-time enrollment and 3.0 GPA are maintained. All students who meet requirements and have been accepted to the University will automatically be considered for the scholarship.

My son attends SMU and $1500/$3000 per year, barely begins to cover the $45,000 in tuition and fees, and you will still need additional money for meals and housing. Of course you might be eligible for loans, grants, work study or other types of non merit aid, and there are always outside scholarships.

SMU does offer 10 full tuition scholarships with a 3.7 transfering GPA :
This scholarship awards 10 full-tuition scholarships for up to five terms to students transferring from Collin, Dallas, Grayson, Kaufman, Navarro and Tarrant County community college districts and completing their admission application by April 1 (fall-term entrants only). This scholarship is renewable if full-time enrollment and a 3.0 GPA are maintained.

And SMU offers a Transfer Honors Scholarship:
Students with a at least 50 transferable credit hours and a minimum 3.7 GPA who are transferring from two- or four-year institutions in the fall or spring term are eligible for half-tuition for up to five terms. The scholarship is renewable if full-time enrollment and 3.0 GPA are maintained. All students who meet the requirements and have been accepted to the University will automatically be considered for the scholarship

If I did the math correctly, you would need to have a 4.0 average on your next 20 credit hours to obtain a 3.7.

If cost is a concern, UT is a more viable option.

Good luck!
