Do I have a chance?

GPA: 3.4
ACT: 25
4 AP’s and 2 honors. AP US: 3
Great LOR’s
About 10-15 Ec’s over the last 4 years.

i’m responding, since no one else has. i think your stats are marginal, to low. but without further details i can’t comment. good luck!

mvg5678, where else did you apply?
i have similar stats, but a higher gpa, let me know how it goes for you!

I think depending on your interest and how tough of a school you went to, you may have a shot. You are still within range on the GPA and perhaps slightly below the test score range. Its worth a shot, we do have nearly a 50% acceptance rate.

DeeDee-

I applied to eight schools:

Penn State: Accepted
Stony Brook: Accepted
U of Albany(safety): Accepted
SUNY Cortland(safety): Accepted
NYU
Boston University
American University
Northeastern University

I applied to BU, NEU and NYU as well. im so freaked out! lol Def. let me know how it goes!
Good luck!

Your stats look similar to mine. I had a 28 ACT and averaged 4’s on my AP’s in high school. I graduated High School in 2006 and am now a sophomore in SOC and SPA at AU.

Unless we have gotten a lot more selective in the past two years, I think you have a strong shot. Best of luck!

(I’m also curious as to why “happycollegemom” would say your stats are bad when they are pretty average if not slightly below average.)

Penn State Main Campus or a branch campus?

Thanks DeeDee! Best of luck to you as well.
Thanks as well Superman.

Jec-

I was accepted to a branch campus. I thought I had a fair chance and they sent my letter pretty late-about 2 weeks ago and my application was a complete the last week of October. My friend just received his(same decision) and he had a 1940 SAT and 3.7 GPA.

hi guys~ gee, i didn’t say mvg’s stats are “bad”. go see my post! and yes, superman, AU and ALL schools are getting more selective each year, especially since the huge numbers applying to college haven’t dropped off yet. competition is FIERCE! your ACT was 28 two years ago. that’s a significant difference from a 25 now. AU’s ACT range for the mid 50% is 25-30 i think, and their average GPA is 3.5 or so unweighted. and as i said before, if i knew more about mvg’s community service, leadership, rigor of classes that would all help. school use their own method of conversion for GPAs, which usually pares down the focus to englishes, maths, sciences, histories, foreign lang., in that order. so as i said, mvg, of course you have a chance, but hard to say not knowing the rest. 4 APs and 2 honors is also not too strong, BUT if your school offers few, thenmaybe that’s a GREAT number. colleges will compare what YOU took vs. what your school offered.

Happycollegemom, what if I moved from one school that didn’t offer APs at all (in Canada) to a school that was all APs in the US during my senior year?

Happycollegemom,
As a student at AU, I was trying to offer my perspective. I have worked in the admissions office since I was a freshman, so I do have a decent idea of what it takes to get into the university. I based my original comment on my experiences working 25 hours a week in the admissions office for the past 18 months, not Princeton Review or other such sites. I am aware that AU gets more selective each year, thank you for pointing it out to me.

I do apologize if I characterized your comments incorrectly by using the word “bad” in place of “marginal to low.” To me they are synonymous but you apparently feel otherwise. Bottom line, my understanding of this site is to help students make the right decision in a college, and since your original post served to do little more than to discourage the original poster, I felt your comments were disrespectful. Perhaps that’s my mid-western mentality, but that was my perception. I hadn’t visited this site since I was applying to colleges, and when I stumbled upon it I decided to offer my insights to perspective students. Apparently my input is worthless, so I’ll stop posting.

mvg: so long as your extra-curricular activities and volunteer work are good, you will be accepted… there is no doubt in my mind.

ckingston~ just be sure to let your applications reflect your experiences as you’ve just described. a Canadian education and how it’s structured is known to be different fron the US, so highlight that. do canadian schools send in “report cards” with transcripts, as here? that would clearly show them the differences. good luck.

whoa, superman! calm down. i agree the purpose here is to HELP others, and that’s what i was doing. no one is critcizing you or your input. i was agreeing with you that with each passing year, it’s getting harder everywhere. unless i hear from the OP i have no reason to think i was discouraging. what is unkind is to be dishonest or inaccurate with those seeking information.
MVG~ i’m here if you ever want to PM.

Hey guys calm down.

I understand where superman and happycollegemom are coming from and I greatly appreciate any input to this thread. There shouldn’t be any hard feelings and I guess I’m at fault for not explaining further. My EC’s are good and my volunteering is also. So thanks a lot for your input and I hope there isn’t any more problems.

On a lighter note, Superman you say you work in the admissions office? Do you know when our decisions are coming out? Haha. I hope I get in.

mvg~ if you haven’t already been on it, the AU thread about “is it friday” will give you an idea of decisions coming out. state by state! consensus is it’ll be this week! as always, good luck! :)

I have been on it but superman says he works there, so there is more, lets just say credible information. : )

aah…an inside source! hang in!

yea i did that, thanks HCM… ahh… im going to be gittery all next week @_@

you’re welcome, cking! ha! i like that word, “gittery”! you guys better sound off when you hear! i’m here waiting with you! you all are bringing back memories!!! almost there… :o
