Do I have a chance?

Hi, please let me know if I even have a chance? Thanks!

I've been very interested in Villanova (school of business, MIS), but my scores aren't the best. I go to a highly competitive school.

GPA: 3.56
Rank: 500/1402
SAT: 1890 (taking again, trying ACT also)

National Merit Commended
National Honors Society
AP English Lang- 3

I am currently taking 4 APs my senior year. My grades are really good this year. Took all really hard classes in HS like AP and all honors.

I volunteer in a lot of places: public library, local church, regional hospital, the museum, courtyard theater. also, helped out with city environmental staff on increasing recycling.

I really enjoy volunteering with children: the children's place, my church's sunday school, and since 6th grade, I've been assisting at VBC. I've gone on a mission trip and taught 5-day clubs (CEF).

My essay's really amazing. (went through culture-shock when I was little and learned a lot)

so far you're doing really well...its just that your GPA and ranking is really low...i have many alumni's from Villanova and they were at the top of their class and they had a difficult time making it in. I'm not here to lower your hopes just to shine a little light on the situation. Going to a competitive school shouldn't really matter, but what you get in there does. If someone is ahead of you, strive to be better than them. This is what truly shows in your college applications: That you have overcome all the obstacles that were present. Apply anyway, since your SAT score's are pretty high and i'll wish you good luck.

Thanks! I'm going to still try and apply to Villanova as my first choice.

Also: Is there any college you would recommend for a business major (possibly) that I might be able to get in to?

If you're looking for a Catholic school try Loyola College of Maryland or St. Josephs University in Philadelphia. Villanova's Business School is EXTREMELY competitive.

That's what I've been worried about.

However, I understand that some colleges favor students from certain high school more than others, based on the rigor of their courses in that school. I've been in all honors(if AP is not available) and AP classes in HS, which is not easy considering our school's rank. I spend more than 10 hours a night on school work, am very involved in clubs, and volunteer constantly at church and in the community. Overall, I think I'm more than ready for college (i'm taking all college level courses this year and making As now) and am just looking for a college where I can continue to study hard at.

I'm basically undecided, but I'm hoping to major in business (MIS). I'm looking for a Christian school (Catholic's fine though).

Thanks for the help!

Although I agree that colleges favor certain high schools more than others because of their rigor and/or religious aspect, you still appear to be on the low end of Villanova's accepted student profile. You also didn't list your class rank, which would make your stats clearer. I know our HS(USNWR top HS and one of the best in the state) GC has a little book with stats from previous years of kids who were accepted to certain schools--and if they got in for liberal arts, engineering, business etc. Maybe that would help shed a little light on where you stand. Villanova had over 15,000 applicants last year, with over 5000 to the business school. Make sure your essays are stellar, that may be how you can set yourself apart in the pack of applicants. Best of luck to you.

I spent a lot of time on my essays and I've shown them to my counselor and teachers. According to my AP Eng Lit teacher, who's graded essays for students who've gone to Yale, Penn, Brown, and Harvard, my essay is a 9+ on the AP scale, so I'm thinking my essay might be one of my strong points.

PS: isn't my rank just the 500/1402?
