so i'm currently a junior i'm getting really worried about my chances at UW! it's my first choice. i have decent stats but i feel that they're not good enough. this year basically everyone at my school who applied got in (my school's one of the top 10 in the state), so that makes me feel better but i'm starting to get really worried because i have no idea what i'm gonna do if i don't get in.

i'm a female, a minority... living in the suburbs of seattle
GPA: 3.7 (UW)
SAT: 1850
Reading: 580 Math: 620 Writing: 650
APs (including the ones i'm taking next year): world history, us history, env.science, spanish, calc AB, gov, psych, bio, + a bunch of honors classes..
AP scores so far: AP world - 2 (i slept through the class. got an A though)
i'm anticipating at least 3's for all my APs this year
extracurriculars: key club, volunteer, piano for 7 years, private tutoring (1 time thing)

i'm also worried about my ECs cuz i really have none besides those. i'm not a sports person, and i'm actually not even all that active in key club anymore. i volunteer a lot though on my own.

i'm also wondering whether i should retake the SAT? i'm content with 1850 cuz i got 1760 on my first one, but i really wanted 1900+. i think i could get higher if i retake but i really do not want to sit through it again. but should i retake???

not definitely in. I have two friends who I would have given 99% chance of getting in who got waitlisted, and this from the high school that sends more kids to uw than any other school. they both did full IB Diploma (super rigorous course load) and had some ec’s, and good test scores, and one of them had 2 yrs of calculus under his belt. on the flip side, uw admitted some people I felt were far less competitive, who don’t even hold a candle when compared to these two students. Overall, uw admissions are pretty finicky.

You’ve got a good chance, but I bet you can bump your sat up a bit (unfortunately, uw doesn’t even look at the writing section, which is your best score), and take a hard schedule next year to further improve your chances.

Also, APPLY EARLY. uw does rolling admissions, so the sooner you put your application in, the better your chances of getting in are. I think the application goes “live” early september, and you should definitely apply by the end of that month for the best chances if it’s your top choice.

but do apply early. The application doesnt go live until about September, but you can still access it. For example, I started mine in July (Autumn 2009 quarter wasnt available then, but once it was I selected it and sent it in)

I sent my app in around the first week of october, and had heard back by mid-november. it’s a relief to get into one of your tops that early on.

yea i feel like UW is really random with their admissions which scares the shiz out of me. im definitely not slacking next year with my schedule and im doing a bunch of productive things this summer so i hope that helps.
im really thinking i should take the SAT again. CR is my worst enemy…
would it be too late if i took it in october? i really dont think taking it in may or june will help me improve much and theres no time to practice with APs and finals coming up. but if i wait til october then i can’t apply early. so yea i have no idea what to do

although you seem really qualified, i have to tell you not to expect anything. i thought i was in for sure. 3.64 GPA, 1920 sat, 30 act, 5 honors classes, 5 ap classes, soccer, cross country, job for 2 years, weekly volunteer service, two years on the DECA executive board, dance at the local studio, and teaching french for my senior project. i was waitlisted. admissions were tough this year, but it is still tricky to figure out if you’re in or not. good luck.

if you think your score will go up if you take the SAT again, go for it. And october is not too late.

Also, make sure you have tons of extracurriculars, or at least show commitment to one in particular. Take a look at the application now, the essays dont change so you can start brainstorming a killer essay.

^^^ Although if you’re considering the honors program, that essay WILL change. Several of my peers wrote their honors essays during the summer, only to see it change once the application went live. The personal statement and diversity questions shouldn’t go anywhere though.

Also, after reading your original post again, I think you’re chances are pretty good:

minority + female + Seattle = great boost to your already competitive application. Although you should definitely still take advantage of all the suggestions listed in this thread.

You’re not in, but you have a good shot. Try to get the SAT score up, because UW goes almost completely by the numbers due to the volume of applications they get. What about ACT score?
