I know these threads are kind of annoying, but I just applied ED and am so nervous about whether or not I'll get in. Any help would be really appreciated!

I was planning on taking more AP classes Junior year to boost my GPA, but I wasn't able to because I was studying abroad. I wrote this on my application though. I want to study German and International Relations. Thanks everyone!

I didn’t take the SAT. I was sick when I was supposed to take it last spring, and was pretty happy with my ACT score. The website says they’ll take either SAT or ACT, will my ACT score not be enough?

I assume your UW gpa is below 3.5, given that your W gpa is 3.63 and you have taken honors and an AP. So, your GPA is below average, and your test scores are dead average or maybe even slightly below average (the accepted student stats are normally lower than the enrolled student stats, and for the admission strategy, it’s the accepted students stat comparison that matters, so what appears to be an average score among the enrolled students are actually below average for accepted students).

Based on these, you have below (though not far below) 50% chance for getting admitted.

Your ECs other than the study abroad program sort of blends in among other applicants, so I don’t think you can count on EC other than the study abroad stuff to make the admission officers stop and pay attention to you and make up for the lower GPA, etc.

Usually, the rule of the thumb is, if you have no hook, your stats have to be way better than median or average published numbers.

I think in your case, it all depends on how you position your self vis-a-vis the study abroad program. Plus ED!!!

So, if you apply ED and make a very interesting case with your study abroad experience, you’ve got a chance.

Caveat: ED is test optional this year. Which means, among the ED applicants the GPA may go up since high GPA/low test scores applicants may be “encouraged” to apply early. This may turn out to be a disadvantage for you.

Thanks lizmane, I plan on applying ED because of all the reasons you listed. When I came back from Germany I had to enroll in Advanced Alegbra II due to class size issues, even though Math is my worst subject. I ended up making a D in the class (which brought my GPA down significantly), even though I worked with a tudor. I mentioned this on my application, as advised by my guidance councelor. I don’t know how much teacher/counselor reccomendations mean during admissions but I know those will be excellent. I plan to apply to American and some universities in the UK, but GWU is my first choice.

correction: test optional for ED is American University, NOT GWU.

another correction: for accepted students, the stats are HIGHER than the enrolled students (another mistake I made in the earlier post). So, if you are 50% in the published (enrolled) school stats, you are below 50% among the accepted students.

The reason why this happens is because accepted students with higher stats have more options and may go and enroll in other schools.

The kind of schools which have similar scores for accepted and enrolled students are tippy top, top, top schools.
