I am a junior in high school with a 3.96 UW gpa and 3.82 W and being in the top 7% of my class. By the end of my junior year, I would have taken 10 AP classes with the rest being honors or gifted classes with the exception of cp french 1.I am planning to do Dual Enrollment for math next year at GA Tech. I also am in many clubs and activities including math team, mu alpha theta, chess club, chess team, NEHS, national science honor society, french club, and beta club. Do i have a chance of getting to a top university (Ivy league and UC schools)?

I’ve never “chanced” anybody, but I’ll try. :)

There are a couple of weak points in your application.

1) GPA. This may be atoned for by your rigorous classes, but I’m not sure. I think it depends on what classes you got the Bs in and if there’s a good reason (e.g. divorce, transfer).
2) You’ve got extracurriculars, but have you done anything meaningful in any? Anybody can sign up for nearly infinite clubs, but have you been elected, helped with major projects, etc? However, you’re showing depth and breadth in your ECs, which is good.

If you could provide SAT/ACT (w/ writing) and SAT II scores, it would help. If you’ve got a 2400 and three 800s, that’ll help offset that GPA. Also, what kind of HS are you attending? If it’s a really weak public school, that’ll hurt you since you have a 3.8. If it’s strong, that’ll help.

I am an active member in the clubs and do a lot of activities in them. I may need to do more service hours but that’s about all i can think of for beta club. My school is in the top 150 in the nation for public schools with my class comprising of around 800 people. I haven’t taken the SAT but based on my preparation so far, I think I will probably get around a 2100 or so. I am planning to take the SAT in march and october of next year, and subject tests in january and june. The way my school does AP classes is that they add 10 points to each class so basically only 1 B in a non-ap class. I am getting As with the 10 points though. Thanks for your opinions so far regarding my question.

Top 150? That will help with the GPA. Also, that ten point thing is odd. I don’t know how if the ten points will be removed for your unweighted or not; talk to your counselor.

2100 is a little low. What’s your school’s median?

Service hours aren’t as important as leadership. Become Prez of BETA, MATH, etc! However, don’t spread yourself too thin.

The 10 points are taken away when dealing with the weighted gpa. My school’s median sat is 1560. Typically, around 6 or 7 people per grade or at most 10 get 2100+ on their SATs

I’m confused. I go to a school that doesn’t do any weighting, so someone please explain to me how 1) a 3.96 is low 2) how the unweighted GPA can be higher than the weighted GPA. You say that the 10 points are removed “when dealing with the weighted GPA.” I thought by the definitions of the word it should be the other way around…

Lets say i get a a 86 in a AP class. For school gpa purposes and class rank, 10 points are added to the grade, making it 96.
A 96 is a A so it geta 4.0 on the scale. Meanwhile when I apply to other universities, chances are that not all schools have weighted systems. your school doesn’t have one. So to be fair for everyone, 10 points are removed and a .5 is added.
So an 86 which is a 3 would turn out to be a 3.5 with the .5 bonus for AP classes
Hope this was clear.

YOu could do ok with UC’s if your a Cal resident. i dont know about the ivies,

@Cranberry Orange:
When I typed that, I assumed he had accidentally reversed UW and W. (We all do it from time to time.) If I’m correct, 3.8 is kinda low for Ivies, but 3.96 is on par.

@Andy:
I’m thoroughly confused about how your school’s GPA system works. Give us the GPA without the 10 points and the .5, please. :)
